We have all been getting a lot of questions about what exactly is going on up here at the landfill. Hopefully I can answer those questions with this post.
First, we are in the process of closing all of the places where garbage has been buried since this became a landfill. Regulations require that two feet of clean soil is put over the top of our 50+ years of garbage.
Second, we are also in the process of building our transfer station. What does that mean? There are several counties that have gone together and purchased land out near the Bear Lake / Caribou county line. You, the public, will continue to bring your garbage here to the landfill where you will dump it inside a building (transfer station) instead of on the hill. Then, instead of burying it here, we will load it onto semi trailers and haul it to the new regional facility where it will be buried.
We will still accept paint, refrigerators, household quantities of hazardous chemicals, used oil, batteries, metal, tires, cement, and trees/ branches in the specified areas here at the landfill. If you do not sort these materials yourself you will be charged a sort fee of $100. Something to keep in mind when preparing to bring garbage up to the landfill.
We are not sure exactly when the transfer station will be ready to go, but we are hoping for fall time (hopefully before we have to deal with mud).
