Yesterday, members of the Montpelier Police Department were honored to es**rt participants in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Vermont as they made their way through the Capital City and up to the Vermont State House.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising movement for Special Olympics worldwide, bringing together law enforcement officers and Special Olympians in support of inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

For decades, law enforcement agencies across Vermont and the country have proudly partnered with Special Olympics, building lasting relationships with athletes and their families both on and off the field of competition. The Torch Run represents far more than a relay—it symbolizes the commitment of officers and communities to stand alongside Special Olympians and celebrate their achievements.

Thank you to the athletes, volunteers, supporters, and law enforcement personnel who participated today. It was a privilege to help carry the Flame of Hope through Vermont’s Capital City.

Bomb Threat Investigation at Three Montpelier Schools

MONTPELIER, VT — On June 3, 2026, at approximately 8:28 a.m., the Montpelier Police Department received a report of a bomb threat at Montpelier High School, located at 5 High School Drive in Montpelier.

At approximately 8:31 a.m., Union Elementary School, located at 1 Park Avenue, received the same threat. A third threat was reported at approximately 8:33 a.m. at The New School, located at 11 West Street.

Each school immediately implemented its internal lockdown procedures while Montpelier Police officers responded to the locations. Officers worked closely with school administrators and staff, coordinated with the Vermont Intelligence Center, and conducted assessments of the affected properties. After completing their response and determining there was no credible threat to public safety, all schools were returned to normal operations at approximately 9:13 a.m.

Based on the information currently available, the incidents appear consistent with a common "swatting" pattern, in which false emergency reports are made to law enforcement or dispatch centers to prompt a significant public safety response. The origin of the calls remains under investigation.

The Montpelier Police Department would like to thank the staff, students, and administrators of Montpelier Public Schools and The New School for their professionalism, calm demeanor, and cooperative efforts throughout the incident. Their teamwork and adherence to established safety protocols contributed to the swift and orderly resolution of these events.

There is no ongoing threat to the schools or the community.

No further information is available for release.
