June is National Homeownership Month, so we thought we'd share some of the support available to Vermonters on the path to buying a home.

If you are interested in purchasing a home, homebuyer education classes, down-payment assistance grants, and other services are available through the five NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Centers across the state. Learn more and explore homebuyer resources here: https://vhcb.org/resources/

If you are ready to apply to a homeownership program, contact your local affordable housing organization or Habitat for Humanity chapter or affiliate to ask about available opportunities.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis as long as funds are available. Home buyers must have a household income below 120% of the applicable county median income for community land trust programs, or below 80% of median income for Habitat for Humanity homes. Successful completion of a home purchase education program at one of the five NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Centers is required for each buyer receiving VHCB funds.

It’s Homeownership Month, and this story is a beautiful reminder of what homeownership can mean for a family and for a community. For many families, the biggest hurdle is the upfront cost, which can make owning a home feel out of reach. This article shows how RuralEdge's shared equity program helped make homeownership possible for one Northeast Kingdom family while also helping keep that home affordable for the future. It’s an encouraging look at how this model is creating opportunity and helping more Vermonters put down roots in the communities they love.

What does community-led conservation look like?

The Danville Train Station sat empty for decades after rail travel declined. But the community never stopped advocating for it—through incremental repairs, historical documentation, and persistence.

When the 93-mile Lamoille Valley Rail Trail came through, Danville saw its moment. With support from VHCB and local partners, they transformed the 1871 depot from artifact to amenity.

The train station reopened last September as a functioning trailhead with accessible facilities and historical exhibits. Plans include bike rentals and food service. Watch this WXAC clip of the transformation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGBsP_prQXo

This is our dual mission in action: historic conservation that creates community infrastructure, together with partners:

On Friday, we joined our partners from Good Samaritan Haven to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Turret House in Montpelier. Turret House offers 18 beds and year-round shelter and services, helping connect residents with stability and care in the community they know.

We’re grateful to all who helped make this possible and to the partners working every day to respond to Vermont’s housing needs.

It's Friday and we thought we'd mix things up by introducing one of our office dogs who brightens our days.

🐾 Meet Lucy, VHCB's most effective — supervisor of snack activity. 🐾

Lucy’s specialties include 5-mile walks, easement monitoring (when allowed), and farm visits — especially when her favorite friends: goats and cows are involved.

When she’s not out in the field, you can usually find her on her bed next to Rebecca William's desk, hard at work on quality control and snack distribution oversight.

We’re pretty lucky to have her on the team. 💙

Join a great team doing meaningful work for Vermont!

We’re hiring: Senior Housing & Community Development Specialist to help expand permanently affordable housing across the state.

At VHCB, you’ll be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team working at the intersection of housing, finance, and community impact. This is an opportunity for someone with experience in housing development, real estate finance, feasibility analysis, or multifamily underwriting to use their skills to help bring high-quality affordable homes online for Vermonters.

We’re also proud to share that VHCB is Great Place to Work Certified for two years in a row — a reflection of the supportive, welcoming culture our team has built together.

In this role, you’ll evaluate housing funding applications, assess risk, work with development partners, prepare recommendations for Board action, and support projects from underwriting through implementation. The position is based in Montpelier, Vermont, with some remote work possible, and the salary range is $72,000–$82,000, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

What happens when housing and conservation work together?

They multiply. Into protected farms and affordable homes. Resilient downtowns and healthy forests. Communities where people can stay and land that supports them.

For 39 years, VHCB has pursued both goals at once—as one vision for Vermont's future.

We've developed a newsletter to share what that looks like in practice. It's called "Meeting the Moment," and once a month, we're bringing together dual goal stories, partner voices, project updates, and resources for the work ahead.

We’re excited to welcome Marty Washo to VHCB.

Marty joins us with more than a decade of experience in grant writing and project management. Their background spans leadership roles in nonprofit development, consulting, program evaluation, and cross-departmental collaboration.

At VHCB, Marty is joining the Farm & Forest Viability Program, where they’re eager to bring their grants experience to support the people who steward Vermont’s working lands, grow and produce local food, and promote healthy forests.

When asked what they’re most excited to support or learn in their work at VHCB, Marty shared:

“I’m excited to contribute my experience with grants to the Farm and Forest Viability Program's efforts to support those who steward Vermont's working lands, growing and producing local food and promoting healthy forests.

I'm looking forward to learning more about how VHCB implements its unique dual goal mission and to building relationships with the Viability program's participants and partners.”

Please join us in welcoming Marty to the team.
