The United States Treasury has stopped minting pennies, which can be challenging when making change. Act 128 of 2026 provides guidance on how businesses should round cash transactions to the nearest nickel ($0.05) if they choose to not use pennies:
✔️Round up or down after totaling the purchase, taxes, and fees.
✔️Cash totals ending in $0.01, $0.02, $0.06, or $0.07 are rounded down to the nearest nickel ($0.05).
✔️Cash totals ending in $0.03, $0.04, $0.08, or $0.09 are rounded up to the nearest nickel ($0.05).

This law only affects cash transactions. It does not include electronic payments, payments of wages, or rebates. Learn more at tax.vermont.gov
