"The Chaplains of Mount Independence," on Oct. 17, 2026, honored the chaplains who served at Mount Independence in 1776-77. Site interpreter Mike, who also as a reenactor portrays a Revolutionary War chaplain, organized the event and set up his tent, similar to what chaplains and others might have used during the war. The connection was made between Vermont's Warner's Regiment in the war and today's Vermont Army National Guard. Mike talked about the Mount Independence chaplains and their role in the war, a veteran Navy chaplain who attended talked about his experiences, and Chaplain (Major) Eric Stuepfert, from the Vermont Army National Guard Chaplain Corps, discussed the current chaplain corps, how it has carried on this legacy and has evolved to meet today’s needs. Several attendees shared their stories. Another special event to commemorate this 250th anniversary year!

Happy Birthday, Aurora! Born on October 16, 1868, today we celebrate the life of Aurora Pierce. History has marked her as a penny-pinching curmudgeon, but the Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, Plymouth, VT, honors her as early preserver of Coolidge history. Aurora served as the family’s housekeep from 1908 until 1956, and the artifacts found at the Coolidge Homestead today were under her tender care. The site wouldn’t be what it is without her.

WCAX story on the archaeology work at at the Bennington Battle Monument State Historic Site, Bennington, VT.

The limestone holding the Bennington Battle Monument is waterlogged with thousands of gallons of water. Before the state can make repairs to the 300-foot-tall obelisk, officials have to see what lies beneath it, which ties into the reason the monument is there.
