Important School Safety Update | Montrose High School

We want our community to be aware of a law enforcement presence at Montrose High School today.

Earlier today, MHS received an anonymous safety report through Safe2Tell that prompted a law enforcement response. School and district staff are working closely with law enforcement and will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day.

School is continuing as scheduled. You may see additional law enforcement support on campus throughout the day.

We will share additional information if circumstances change or when there is a significant update.

The US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued a FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING for Montrose County.

* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE...Portions of Colorado, including the following areas, Central Colorado River Basin, Central Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Basin, Central Yampa River Basin, Debeque to Silt Corridor,
Flat Tops, Four Corners/Upper Dolores River, Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys, Grand Valley, Grand and Battlement Mesas, Northwest San Juan Mountains, Paradox Valley/Lower Dolores River, Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus, Southwest San Juan Mountains, Uncompahgre Plateau and Dallas Divide, Upper Gunnison River Valley and West Elk and Sawatch Mountains and Utah, including the following areas, Arches/Grand Flat,Canyonlands/Natural Bridges, La Sal and Abajo Mountains, Southeast
Utah and Tavaputs Plateau.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Recent burn scars will also be especially susceptible and these include the Lee and Elk RX, Gold Mountain and Elk, Ferris, and Babylon burn scars to name a few.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Monsoonal moisture will remain across the area today and will support thunderstorms and showers with heavy rainfall across the watch area. Several rounds of heavier rain are expected increasing the chance for flash flooding especially in our more
susceptible areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

‼️Request for Information‼️

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public's assistance with an ongoing death investigation involving an incident that occurred on the 190 block of West 7th Avenue in the Town of Nucla in Montrose County, Colorado.

On 07/03/26, a male was reported to have suffered a self-inflicted injury in the 190 block of West 7th Avenue in Nucla, CO and later succumbed to that injury.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff's Office is asking that anyone with information related to this case please contact WestCO Dispatch at 970-249-9110 or the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office at 970-252-4023.

We share this information with the public to better explain how our local legal system works and how it impacts community safety.

Across the country, courts are increasingly using lower bonds and personal recognizance releases to reduce jail populations. While these approaches may serve some communities well, their effects can look different once they reach the local level. Here in Montrose County, we are seeing how those decisions play out in day-to-day life.

When individuals are released shortly after arrest, victims and residents may feel unsettled, especially when they encounter the same people back in the community soon after an incident. That experience can feel like revictimization and can influence how safe people feel going about their daily routines.

Law enforcement makes arrests based on probable cause and available evidence. From there, charging decisions move beyond law enforcement and ultimately rest with the District Attorney’s Office, while bond decisions are made by the courts. Once a bond is set and posted, we are legally required to follow that order.

Public safety isn’t just measured in statistics or headlines. It’s measured in whether families feel secure at home, business owners feel confident opening their doors, and neighbors feel at ease in their own community.

This effort is about providing clarity, accountability, and keeping the public informed about how these decisions affect Montrose County.

Meet William the Goat; however, his friends call him Billy!

Billy, as he has expressed, is his preferred name; was picked up by our infamous Animal Control Officer, Carlos Funes, after being caught grazing without a license and wandering about with a lost expression in his eyes. I mean, really look into his eyes. ACO Funes did, and it made him smile as in the photo.

Apparently, the grass looked greener on the other side of the fence…and Billy took that personally, made his escape, and is now wanted … by his owner, whoever that is.

Billy was found in the area of the 8800 block of 6400 Road and was safely transported to the Montrose Animal Shelter, located at 3383 N. Townsend Ave. in Montrose.

If Billy belongs to you, or you know where this little hoofed critter calls home, please get in touch with the shelter at 970-252-4709. The office is open until 5:00 p.m.

Let’s help Billy get baaack (I know, kinda corny) home before he gets in more trouble for his graze offenses.
