Having a Great Year, Want it to Last Forever: The Perpetual Impact of Montrose Area Foundation

As 2024 unfolds, residents of Montrose and the surrounding areas are reflecting on the achievements and positive developments that continue to enrich the community. One pivotal organization driving these successes is the Montrose Area Foundation (MAF), an entity dedicated to making a lasting impact that benefits current and future generations alike.

The MAF stands out not only for its immediate contributions but also for its steadfast commitment to long-term community betterment. By donating to the MAF, individuals ensure their generosity will have a ripple effect, benefiting Montrose residents for years to come. The promise of creating a perpetual legacy isn’t just an aspiration—it’s a tangible reality for Montrose, exemplified through impactful projects and initiatives.

Over the years, the MAF has spearheaded numerous projects that have significantly enhanced the quality of life in Montrose. These efforts include improving summer recreation ball fields, constructing a city picnic shelter, renovating the American Legion building, supporting the Montrose All School Reunion, and contributing to Vacation Bible School. These endeavors highlight the foundation’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and engaged community.

Another cornerstone of MAF’s work is its support for recreational spaces, exemplified by its ongoing contributions to the Montrose swimming pool. The foundation also plays a critical role in bolstering essential services like the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.

Education remains a key focus for the MAF, as demonstrated by the Montrose Area Scholarship Fund, established in 2013. This initiative has been instrumental in supporting Montrose High School graduates as they pursue post-secondary education. In 2024, the foundation marked its ninth year of distributing scholarships, with another round of awards provided to deserving students earlier this year. To date, the fund has helped 82 graduates take the next step toward their futures, underscoring the MAF’s unwavering commitment to education.

As we celebrate the ongoing achievements of our community, the Montrose Area Foundation continues to shine as a symbol of hope and unity. Supporting the MAF with a tax-deductible donation not only contributes to Montrose’s present prosperity but also invests in a future filled with promise. In a world of constant change, the MAF remains a steadfast reminder of the enduring power of community-driven action.

Making a Gift of Commodities to Montrose Area Foundation

Bestowing a gift of grain or any other commodity to the Montrose Area Foundation is a meaningful way to leave a lasting positive impact on your community. An additional advantage is that such a commodity gift can offer you tax benefits.

The key to successfully gifting grain is to ensure the ownership of the grain is transferred to the Montrose Foundation when it is delivered to the elevator and before it is sold. To avail the tax advantage, it is crucial that the Foundation, rather than the donor, becomes the entity responsible for selling the grain and assuming the associated price risk.

The process can be outlined as follows:

• The farmer delivers the grain to the elevator.
• The farmer designates the grain in the name of the Montrose Area Foundation.
• The elevator notifies the South Dakota Community Foundation (at 800-888-1842) about the grain designated to the Montrose Area Foundation.
• The Foundation handles the sale of the grain.
• The Montrose Area Foundation receives the funds, and the farmer is duly recognized (or it can be anonymous if you wish) for the gift, enjoying the associated tax advantage – a mutually beneficial outcome for both you and your community.

Should you have any inquiries regarding this process, please reach out to Montrose Area Foundation board member Larry Zimmer at 605-941-4197. Katrina and Tyler at our local Central Farmers Elevator are also well-versed in this process, as are most grain elevators in the area.

Giving Thanks Together in Montrose, South Dakota

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the many reasons we’re grateful—and in Montrose, South Dakota, those reasons are as plentiful as the vibrant fields and friendly smiles that define our community.

This holiday, we’re reminded of the remarkable blend of small-town charm and natural beauty that makes Montrose such a special place to call home. From the peaceful Vermillion River valley to the stunning prairie sunsets, the land itself is a gift, grounding us in the serenity of rural living.

But more than the beauty of our surroundings, it’s the people of Montrose who make this community extraordinary. Generosity, kindness, and the unwavering support of neighbors are hallmarks of our area. Whether it’s lending a helping hand or celebrating milestones together, Montrose embodies the spirit of unity and togetherness.

Our school, too, is a cornerstone of gratitude this season. The dedication of our educators and the achievements of our students inspire hope and pride in equal measure. We are deeply thankful for the opportunities being created for the next generation, shaping a bright and promising future for our community.

Another blessing we treasure is Montrose’s perfect balance: the peace of rural life combined with the accessibility of nearby cities like Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Madison. It’s a rare privilege to enjoy the quiet comfort of our rural community while being just a short drive away from vibrant cultural and economic hubs.

This Thanksgiving, the Montrose Area Foundation Board of Directors encourages you to pause and reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. From the simple joys of daily life to the enduring strength of our bonds, Montrose gives us so much.
Wishing you and yours a holiday filled with laughter, love, and the richness of community.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Montrose Area Foundation to Host Community Appreciation Event

In 2008, a group of visionary residents from the Montrose area came together with a mission to shape a brighter future for their community. Sixteen years later, the Montrose Area Foundation (MAF) proudly stands as a beacon of that mission, continuing to strengthen the social and economic fabric of the greater Montrose area.

The MAF was created with the goal of attracting charitable contributions from individuals and businesses who share a common purpose: to leave a lasting legacy of support for Montrose and its residents. As an endowment foundation, MAF ensures that donations are preserved for the long-term, using only a portion of the annual earnings to fund grants for local projects. This approach guarantees a perpetual impact, allowing the foundation to continuously reinvest in the community.

Since its founding, MAF has infused over $90,000 in grants into a variety of local projects that benefit Montrose residents. From enhancing summer recreation ball fields and city picnic shelters to renovating the American Legion, Montrose’s All-School Reunion, the MAF’s influence is woven throughout the community. Grants have also supported Vacation Bible School, Montrose swimming pool improvements, the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department/First Responders, McCook County Fairgrounds, the Family Math Project at Montrose School, and the First Circuit Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, among others. In 2013, the Montrose Area Scholarship Sub Fund was created to support Montrose High School graduates as they pursue post-secondary education. This December, the foundation will award its ninth round of scholarships for 2024 graduates, totaling $5,400, to students’ chosen institutions.

To celebrate sixteen years of community support and service, the MAF board of directors is inviting everyone to a community appreciation event on Saturday, December 7th, at the Montrose Legion. The festivities begin at 6:30 PM with a delicious meal featuring pork loin, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, and bottled water. To complete the meal, the Busy Bees community group will be providing homemade bars. For those interested in additional drinks, the Legion bar will be open.

Adding to the evening’s enjoyment, local musician Michael Flannery will entertain guests starting at approximately 7:15 PM. Michael’s engaging music is sure to bring joy to attendees, whether they join for the meal or simply come to listen. For a preview of his music, feel free to visit his page. Michael will be teaming with Salem native and accomplished musician Jon Johnson.

While the event is not intended as a fundraiser, a “free-will” donation bucket will be available for those who wish to contribute toward the meal. There will be no formal speeches or requests for donations—this is purely a celebration of our community and the impact MAF has made together with Montrose residents.

The MAF board of directors warmly invites everyone from the Montrose area and beyond to join them on December 7th at the Montrose Legion. This event is a chance to honor the positive difference the foundation has made over the years and to look forward to a future filled with growth, support, and community connection. Bring your friends, family, and children as we gather to celebrate sixteen years of making Montrose a better place to live, work, and thrive.
