Due to improving conditions and increased fuel moisture, Montrose County will move to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective Friday, September 4, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

While conditions have improved, fire danger remains present, and residents and visitors are encouraged to continue using caution
with any activity that could spark a wildfire.

The US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued a FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING for Montrose County.

* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE...Portions of Colorado, including the following areas, Central Colorado River Basin, Central Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Basin, Central Yampa River Basin, Debeque to Silt Corridor,
Flat Tops, Four Corners/Upper Dolores River, Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys, Grand Valley, Grand and Battlement Mesas, Northwest San Juan Mountains, Paradox Valley/Lower Dolores River, Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus, Southwest San Juan Mountains, Uncompahgre Plateau and Dallas Divide, Upper Gunnison River Valley and West Elk and Sawatch Mountains and Utah, including the following areas, Arches/Grand Flat,Canyonlands/Natural Bridges, La Sal and Abajo Mountains, Southeast
Utah and Tavaputs Plateau.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Recent burn scars will also be especially susceptible and these include the Lee and Elk RX, Gold Mountain and Elk, Ferris, and Babylon burn scars to name a few.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Monsoonal moisture will remain across the area today and will support thunderstorms and showers with heavy rainfall across the watch area. Several rounds of heavier rain are expected increasing the chance for flash flooding especially in our more
susceptible areas.

Do You Remember?

Do you remember when you were young, walking to school on those crisp mornings, laughing and talking with your friends?

Do you remember standing at the school bus stop, excited for the bus to arrive and wondering what the new school day would bring?

Do you remember the excitement of your parents buying you new clothes for the beginning of a new school year, the feeling of putting them on for the first time and heading out the door?

They are walking those same sidewalks, waiting at those same bus stops, and making the same kinds of memories you once did.

The difference is, now you’re the one behind the wheel.

Please slow down. Put the distractions away. Watch for flashing lights, crosswalks, school buses, and children who may not always be watching for you.

When you are driving in or near a school, please be aware and pay attention.

A few extra seconds of patience behind the wheel could protect a child and make sure they have the chance to grow up and someday look back and say: “Do you remember?”

‼️Montrose County Evacuation Zone 34 Update

Thursday, August 6th - Effective ​immediately, the Montrose County Sheriff's Office has lifted the previous evacuation order for zone 34 in Montrose County for the Gold Mountain Fire. This includes the area south of the P77 Road and Cimarron Road intersection and properties on P77 Road approximately one mile north of the intersection.

Residents may return to normal activities within Zone 34. Please note that road and trail closures within the GMUG National Forest remain in effect, and access to those areas is still prohibited. Continue to monitor official sources for updates and use caution, as firefighting operations are still occurring in the area.

Jueves, 6 de agosto – Con efecto inmediato, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Montrose ha levantado la orden de evacuación para la Zona 34 del Condado de Montrose debido al incendio Gold Mountain. 🚩🔥 US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday from 12pm to 8pm.
We are expecting Southwest winds of 15to 15 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. Relative Humidity is expected to be 6 to 11%.
‼️🔥These conditions create an elevated risk for rapid wildfire growth and spread. Please use extreme caution with any activity that could spark a fire and help us keep our community safe.
‼️ REMINDER: Montrose County is still under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. This means no fireworks, no campfires, no agricultural burning, no welding outside, and no use of chainsaws without the use of a spark arresting device.
