You'll be seeing some new faces in our county parks this summer! 🌳☀️

Please join us in welcoming our summer seasonal Conservation Technicians to the Lee County Conservation team. These hardworking crew members play an important role in keeping our parks, campgrounds, trails, and wildlife areas looking their best for visitors.

Throughout the summer, they'll be busy mowing, maintaining trails, painting and repairing shelters, cleaning facilities, picking up litter, assisting with projects, and helping ensure our parks and wildlife areas are the best they can be for everyone to enjoy.

We're especially excited that all three of our seasonal employees are pursuing careers in conservation and natural resources. Providing hands-on experience and helping the next generation of conservation professionals get their start is something we're proud to be a part of!

Help us give Leo, Tobias, and Andrew a warm welcome! 👏

We’re incredibly grateful to the students of Fort Madison Community School District and their Green Team for choosing to support Lee County Conservation through their recycling efforts! ♻️🌎

By turning cans and bottles into something bigger, these students are making a real impact on conservation, outdoor recreation, and environmental education right here in our community. Their generosity helps us continue providing programs, improving parks, and creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect with nature.

Thank you for giving back and for showing what community stewardship looks like at such a young age. We’re proud of you! 💚

🌿 Celebrating National Environmental Education Week! 🌿

This week, we’re proud to recognize the incredible work of our Naturalists, Clay and Lia, who bring conservation to life for our community every single day.

From leading hands-on programs and school field trips to hosting community events and sharing their knowledge of local wildlife and habitats, Clay and Lia play a vital role in connecting people of all ages to the outdoors. Their passion, creativity, and dedication help inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural resources that make Lee County special.

Whether it’s helping a student discover their first frog, guiding a hike, or educating visitors about the importance of conservation, their impact reaches far beyond the moment.

Join us in thanking Clay and Lia for all they do to educate, inspire, and foster a love for the outdoors! 🌎💚

We know you mean well, and we love that. If you want to help wildlife babies this spring, here's what to do:

Leave them alone. Really. In most cases, the babies are just fine and under the direct care of their parents, and any "help" we try to give as humans generally greatly reduces their chances of thriving and surviving.

Wildlife parents do things differently. Rabbit and deer moms, like a lot of other mammal moms, will leave young hidden in the nest during the day while they feed or sleep before returning to check on the little ones at night.

Wildlife kids, including birds, leave the nest or den pretty early. Even then, they're still under the direct care of their parents, who are likely watching nearby and shaking their heads at their kids' questionable decisions.

We know you're still thinking, "but..." and yes, there are times when it's appropriate to call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. If you've just witnessed the parent being hurt or killed, or you can see an animal is visibly injured, call a rehabber (don't touch the nest or animal before calling, and follow the rehabber's instructions). Remember, it's not legal to take in wildlife.
