Some great advice from NHTSA.

National Heat Awareness Day serves as a reminder that heatstroke happens faster than we think — especially for kids.

Earlier this week Officer Cardenas was recognized with the “Outstanding Individual Dedication to Impaired Driving Enforcement – Mountain/Western Slope” award, presented by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

This is an incredible accomplishment, and all of us at the Montrose Police Department are extremely proud of Officer Cardenas and his dedication to keeping the motoring public safe in our community.

In 2025, Officer Cardenas investigated and arrested 32 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol and 8 individuals for driving under the influence of drugs — all while continuing to respond to regular calls for service.

His hard work, commitment, and proactive enforcement efforts help make Montrose a safer place for everyone.

Congratulations, Officer Cardenas, and thank you for your outstanding service to our community!

National Police Week, encompassing May 15th (Peace Officers Memorial Day), is a dedicated time to honor and remember law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
This provides for an opportunity to acknowledge the bravery of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. This includes our own Sergeant David Kinterknecht and Reserve Officer Larry McMaster who died as a result of injuries sustained while serving our community.
The profound impact of their passing continues to be felt across our agency, within the community, among colleagues and partners, and, most deeply, by their families. Even now, both men are profoundly missed and mourned.
