CVFD Joins MFD for Training

Last night during Monday night training, members of Continental Village traveled south with Tanker 11 and Rescue 69 to the Hamlet of Montrose to join our personnel in a review of tanker operations and hose line techniques. This training offered valuable experience for all participants, particularly for our own members who rarely engage in tanker operations as our district has hydrants throughout it.

Members practiced handling hose lines, learned about courtyard stretches, operated pumps from a tanker, and assisted with refilling the tanker. The session enhanced familiarization with equipment and procedures for effective firefighting.

We appreciate the Continental Village Fire Department for their collaboration in this training opportunity and look forward to working with them in the future

Always happy to assist our Neighbors!

Earlier today, we responded to the Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School for a fire alarm. While the investigation did not turn up anything, upon a second alarm, it was discovered that an electrical battery box short circuited, causing a smoke condition and a strong odor of burning in the school. There is no damage to the school.

Thank you to the Montrose Fire District and the Verplanck Fire District for the assist.

Unusual Incident - Hazmat

On Tuesday, April 14 at 5:42 p.m., Montrose was alerted to a reported propane explosion with unknown extent in the Cortlandt Manor area of the district. This activated the Tri-Village response system, in which the agency where the incident occurs responds, while two neighboring agencies stand by for coverage or additional assistance if needed.

Upon arrival, crews determined that the residence itself was not affected, but there was a strong odor of propane in the area. Further investigation revealed that a 500-gallon propane tank had been overfilled during the winter. With this day being the warmest of the year, the increased pressure caused the tank’s relief valve to activate and then fail, releasing compressed liquid propane into the air. This created a visible white v***r, which had been mistaken for an explosion.

Due to the hazardous situation, a hydrant was connected and two hose lines were deployed. The residence was checked for any proane readings. Chief Gilleo notified a local propane company and the Westchester County Hazmat Team for further assistance.

When the Hazmat Team arrived, they determined the best course of action was to perform a flare-off. This controlled burn reduced the pressure inside the tank to safe levels. Once the tank pressure was stabilized, the remaining propane was transferred into the propane company’s service truck for removal.

Units remained on scene until 1:00 a.m., making the incident a seven-hour operation. The propane company, Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Hazmat Team, and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention (State Fire) provided their expertise subject knowledge into this matter and were also able to walk some of our members thru the incident as we don’t usually encounter these types of incidents to often. Appreciation is also extended to 60 Control and neighboring fire departments, Buchanan and Verplanck, who stood by to provide coverage during the extended operation.

Covering The District

On Wednesday night, one of our crews was on overnight standby protecting the district and handling any alarms but that’s just part of the story.

Some members took the opportunity to attend an Incident Safety Officer class hosted at our HQ’s with instructors from Westchester County, while others were getting the station cleaned and ready for the overnight. Once everyone was back, the crew went to work. checking apparatus, washing trucks, reviewing tools, and calibrating our gas meters to make sure everything was ready to go.

At 1:39 AM, we were dispatched for wires down and burning in the district. Crews were out the door quickly, handled the scene efficiently, and stood by for Con Edison to arrive.

After the call, it was right back to standby until 6 AM at which time many of these members headed straight to their regular jobs.

This is just a glimpse of the dedication our firefighters show every day. Proud of this crew and thankful for their continued commitment to our department and community. 🚒
