Join us here at the park this month for one of our many fun and educational programs. Learn about the creepy arachnids at Tonkawa Cave who are just trying to find a cool spot in the summer, or discover the basics of geocaching, which combines technology and the outdoors. If you enjoy hikes, consider one of the amazing, guided hikes through the park both at day and night!

Happy National Dog Day from Mother Neff State Park!

Plenty of visitors enjoy bringing their dogs out on our trails, but since today is Wildlife Wednesday, we wanted to spotlight a couple of our incredible canine natives who call this park home. Meet the gray fox and the coyote! Both are amazingly adapted to life in Texas - but what makes each of them special?

Gray foxes are unique among canines for having semi‑retractable claws, almost like cats! Their long, fluffy tails help with balance as they climb trees and leap from branch to branch. Imagine the trouble your dog could get up to if it could scramble up a tree like a cat... that’s daily life for the gray fox!

Coyotes, on the other hand, are often portrayed as tricksters in folklore, a theme even echoed by Wile E. Coyote in Looney Tunes. In reality, they’re highly intelligent, adaptable, and surprisingly social, often roaming in family groups. If you camp out at the park, listen for their distant yips as they sing a song together as a family.

Whether it’s your loyal companion at the end of the leash or the wild canines quietly navigating the park, today we celebrate all the incredible dogs (both domestic and wild) that make Texas such an amazing place.

Happy National Dog Day! Give your pups an extra pat and keep an eye out for any of our wild neighbors next time you’re on the trails.

🚨Important Notice:

As of now, a burn ban is in effect at Mother Neff State Park until further notice. No open, ash-producing fires are allowed. Campers in reserved campsites may cook with charcoal in a covered grill or containerized fuel stoves. We will provide an update once ban is lifted.

Update: The Park store has reopened! Thank you for your patience while the team quickly and accurately counted all of our cool souvenirs and supplies. Hours for the visitor center are 9 AM to 4 PM daily closing from 12pm to 1pm M-F.

It is time for our annual inventory count and the gift shop area of our visitor center will be closed beginning today through 8/21. The exhibit area and our drive thru will remain open but will close from 12-1pm.

Please use the self-pay station if you visit during lunch or after-hours. Be sure to have plenty of water if you brave the trails. We are forecasted to have triple digits over the next 10 days and beyond🥵

Today is the first day to buy the 2026-27 Hunting and Fishing Licenses! There are many places you can go to purchase yours, including here at the park! Stop inside the Visitor Center between 9am-4pm every day and ask how you can get yours!

Remember, starting this month, individuals age 17 and over must show valid proof of identification to obtain a recreational hunting or fishing license.

It's already August, and you know it's hot, we know it's hot, but we still have some awesome activities going on this month!

Whether you're joining a ranger in Tonkawa Cave to get a closer look at harvestmen (daddy-long-legs), joining in a star party, or learning about the Civilian Conservation Corps and building your own miniature table, there is something for everyone!
