Glades Electric Cooperative Inc.

Glades Electric Cooperative Inc. Glades Electric is a not-for-profit electric co-op powering over 19,000 accounts.

As a locally-owned and led co-op serving Glades, Hendry, Highlands, and Okeechobee counties, we are "Neighbors Working for Neighbors." In the early 1940s, investor-owned utilities were unable to make the investments to expand their systems into the rural areas of Florida’s Heartland to bring power to sparsely populated areas. The signing of the Rural Electrification Act in 1936 allowed residents t

o come together to build their own electric utility with the help of federal loans. In the fall of 1944, local residents banded together to form an electric cooperative to serve residents of Florida’s Heartland who had been left behind in the electrification of rural Florida. Neighbors went to neighbors to gather membership applications, and on January 25, 1945 they gathered on the steps of the courthouse in Moore Haven to officially form Glades Electric Cooperative. Today, Glades Electric Cooperative provides safe, reliable, affordable power to over 18,000 accounts throughout portions of Florida's Heartland in Highlands, Okeechobee, Glades and Hendry Counties. Still, Glades Electric serves more sparsely populated areas than neighboring investor-owned utilities (IOU), averaging seven meters per mile of service line as compared to 51-78 meters per mile of line for nearby IOUs. On our page, you'll find information on services, energy tips, employment opportunities, post-hurricane power restoration and more. We welcome the opportunity to engage with members but do reserve the right to remove obscene, vulgar, or spammed comments and block profiles that engage in such actions. Since this page is not monitored 24/7, any service issues should be reported through our SmartHub app or by calling (855) 940-3810.

Thank you to Florida Commerce Secretary J. Alex Kelly and his team, along with representatives from the Florida SBDC Network, and Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Melanie S. Griffin for touring three of our co-op powered businesses in Glades and Hendry counties yesterday. We appreciate their desire to personally listen first-hand to the challenges faced by small businesses and see the opportunities for growth.

Glades Electric was pleased to join our Glades and Hendry EDC directors leading the tour. It was a great opportunity to showcase the people and businesses helping drive our local economies — and we’re proud to power them.

Help us keep the lights on and restore power faster! ⚡

We can't service lines and equipment we can't access, and repeat trips increase costs for the cooperative.

🔒 If you have a locked gate, make sure it has a GEC lock or provide us with your gate code so our crews can access electrical equipment 24/7 when needed. A GEC lock serves as an additional "link" in your gate chain, so you can continue using your own lock.

If our crews are unable to access your property and must make a return trip, a no-access fee will apply.

Need a GEC lock or to provide your gate code?
