The library’s Pay-It-Forward campaign began in 2007, when an employee from State Bank & Trust chose the library as the recipient of $1,000 from the bank’s Pay It Forward campaign. The money was used to purchase books, selected by students, for the Library’s light reading collection. As a result of this donation, the Library developed its own Pay-It-Forward project and, for the past four years, has
raised money to help individuals and organizations in our communities. This year the library is designating November as “Pay-It-Forward to Minot Flood Victims.” The Minot, North Dakota, flood in June displaced approximately 12,000 people from their homes and affected over 4,000 homes and half of the public schools. The Minot Recovery Fund is established to help “citizens clean up, restore and rebuild their homes and remain in the community.” Concordia College students, staff, and faculty can relate to the dangers of a flood as we fight every spring to save the Fargo-Moorhead communities from the rising Red River. Our donation to Minot will help those who really did not have a chance to save their homes, schools and businesses. The “Pay-It-Forward to Minot Flood Victims” campaign is an art show and contest. Any current Concordia College student may enter one piece of original artwork by November 4. Entry forms are located on the Library’s website http://library.cord.edu and at the Circulation Desk. All artwork will be returned to the artists after the winners are announced on December 11. During the month of November, students, faculty, staff and the community at large will be able to “vote” for their favorite art pieces – with money, a penny a vote. The “votes” will be tallied daily with the results posted on Facebook and in the Library lobby. Winners will be selected in two categories: photography and paintings/drawings. Gift cards will be given to the winners in both of these categories: first place $100, second place $60, and third place $40. If the winning entries are within 5 votes (one nickel) of each other, the higher prize will be awarded to both entries. Please submit your artwork before November 4! Then take time to vote for your favorite piece beginning November 7.
