A Personal Message from the Chief

Thank you for your interest in the Moorhead Police Department. I am incredibly proud of the dedicated men and women who serve and volunteer with us. Every member of our team is committed to serving the Moorhead community with professionalism, integrity, and compassion. The Moorhead Police Department is authorized for 64 sworn officers and 19 civilian support staf

f. Our Patrol Division is the core of our daily operations, responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls 24/7. Each year, officers typically respond to over 30,000 calls for service. Our Investigative Division handles complex, long-term felony investigations, including narcotics cases. We also assign an investigator to the Metro Street Crimes Unit and work closely with local, state, and federal partners to solve and prevent crime across jurisdictions. Our civilian staff play a vital role in our operations by handling records, transcribing reports, managing evidence, conducting parking enforcement, and doing animal control. Additionally, our Crime Analyst, Community Resource Navigator, and Community Policing Coordinator provide essential support in keeping our city safe and informed. We are proud to have 23 dedicated citizens involved in the Moorhead Police Volunteers program. Each year, they contribute over 2,000 hours assisting with house checks, parking enforcement, special events, and administrative tasks. Our Cadet Program also offers local college students a unique opportunity to gain experience and prepare for a future career in law enforcement. We are committed to ongoing training and equipping our team with the latest tools and technology. Through our wellness program and professional development opportunities, we support the health, growth, and preparedness of every employee. From neighborhood watch groups and local schools to nonprofits like the Red River Child Advocacy Center, Churches United, and the R**e and Abuse Crisis Center, our community partners help us deliver on our mission every day. We also value collaboration with other city departments and law enforcement agencies across North Dakota and Minnesota, including the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Fargo Police Department, to keep our region safe and welcoming. This message is just a snapshot of the work we do. I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our programs, services, and how we serve the City of Moorhead. Thank you again for visiting and for your interest in the Moorhead Police Department. Chris Helmick, Chief of Police

Today the Moorhead Police Department shared photos and information from an active case involving THC infused products intentionally packaged to look like candy. This includes the product brought to Horizon Middle School by a student, which contained 300 mg of THC per serving and 3,000 mg THC per package. For context, Minnesota law allows THC edibles sold in stores to contain no more than 5 mg THC per serving and 50 mg THC per package. The item brought to school was far beyond those limits and extremely dangerous – especially for youth.

During the broader investigation, officers also recovered more than 1,900 v**e cartridges, THC edibles and wax, psychedelic mushrooms, and over $73,000 in cash. Sharing these visuals helps our community understand the scale and seriousness of what was found.

We want to reassure families that there is no ongoing safety threat at Horizon Middle School. The school’s safety protocols worked as intended, and we appreciate their strong partnership.

Two Moorhead residents have been charged with 1st Degree Controlled Substance crimes based on the quantity and type of items recovered. The juvenile involved has been identified, and the process of charges is moving forward with the Clay County Attorney’s Office. All suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in court.

This incident is a critical reminder that illegal THC products can be intentionally designed to look like candy or everyday snacks. It is important for parents to stay engaged with their children and stay educated about these products — ask questions, check backpacks, and talk openly about what is safe to consume.

This was a true team effort — from our School Resource Officer and Community Policing Unit to our Investigations and Narcotics teams, the Clay County Sheriff's Office, and Moorhead Area Public Schools. We appreciate their quick action and continued collaboration.

May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re honoring retired Moorhead Police Officer Bradley “Brad” Schenck, who bravely fought a malignant brain tumor and passed away in November 2025.

To honor Brad’s fight, our squad cars are proudly displaying gray Brain Cancer Awareness ribbons throughout the month. You’ll see these ribbons on our vehicles as a visible reminder of Brad’s strength, his service to Moorhead, and the many families impacted by brain cancer.

We are also sharing an online fundraiser opportunity. Purchase a shirt, and $5 from every item sold will be donated to the local Pray for Gray chapter, supporting brain tumor awareness, research, and assistance for families in our region.
