The Clay County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office following the tragic line-of-duty death of Deputy Katherine Frank.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Frank’s family, friends, fellow deputies, and the entire Minnehaha County law enforcement community during this incredibly difficult time.

The loss of a fellow law enforcement officer is felt throughout the entire law enforcement family. We stand alongside our brothers and sisters at the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.

Rest easy, Deputy Frank. We have the watch from here.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – INMATE RELEASE SCAM 🚨

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has recently received reports of scammers contacting family members or friends of individuals being held in the Clay County Correctional Facility.

The caller claims to work for or represent the Sheriff’s Office and tells the person that their family member or friend can be released from jail if they send money. In at least one recent case, a family member sent $2,500 through Zelle after receiving one of these fraudulent calls.

These calls are a scam.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Clay County Correctional Facility will not call you and request payment over the phone to get someone released from jail. We will not ask you to send money through Zelle, Venmo, gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other payment apps in exchange for an inmate’s release.

Release from custody is determined through the legal and court process. Do not send money based on an unsolicited phone call, text message, or other communication claiming that payment will result in someone being released from jail.

If you receive one of these calls:

• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money.
• Hang up and independently contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office to verify the information.
• If you have already sent money, contact your financial institution or payment provider immediately and report the incident to law enforcement.

Scammers can make calls convincing and may have information about the person who is currently in custody. When in doubt, hang up and contact us directly using a phone number you know is legitimate.

Please share this information with family and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims.

These backpacks, filled with essential items for individuals being released from custody, are a great example of how community partnerships can make a meaningful difference during the transition back into the community.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service shown in the moments and days that followed.

We remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, and other first responders who ran toward danger to help others.

We also remember the families who lost loved ones, the survivors whose lives were forever changed, and the men and women of our Armed Forces who answered the call to serve our country in the years that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor their memory and the spirit of unity that brought our nation together.

We will never forget.

School Starts Today!

As students head back to school today, please remember to slow down and stay alert around schools, crosswalks, and school buses.

Watch for children walking or biking to school and give yourself a little extra time during your morning and afternoon commute.

A special reminder: when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must stop. Never pass a school bus when the stop arm is out. Children may be crossing the roadway and may not always be visible.

Please help us keep our students safe as we begin another school year.

Thank you to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Jesse Jahner for hosting the 21st Annual Chiefs and Sheriffs Burger Cook-Off as part of Night to Unite. The friendly competition made it another memorable event.

The competition may be friendly, but the relationships between our agencies are essential. At the end of the day, we are all on the same team when it comes to serving and protecting our region.

On Monday, we welcomed Deputy Braydon Ortloff to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ortloff was sworn in by Sheriff Mark Empting and joins our team after serving nearly four years with the Renville County Sheriff’s Office.

Originally from the Detroit Lakes area, Deputy Ortloff attended Minnesota State University Moorhead and previously interned with the Minnesota Department of Corrections in Moorhead.

Please join us in welcoming Deputy Ortloff to Clay County. We look forward to having him as part of our team!
