URGENT: Inspect Your Heating Oil Tank

As Southeast Alaska shifts from heavy snow to rain and warmer temperatures, the risk of home heating oil spills increases significantly. DEC responders are currently in the field in Juneau investigating an active fuel spill—and we need your help to prevent more.

Even though snowfall has paused, thawing conditions and rain create two major risks for home heating oil systems:

❄️ Roof Sheds
Snow and ice can suddenly slide off roofs with extreme force, damaging tanks or shearing off fuel lines.

⚠️ Added Weight & Movement
Rain-soaked snow is much heavier than dry snow. That added weight can stress tanks, crack fuel filters, or cause fuel lines to fail.

What You Should Do Today

🧤 Clear with Care
Before shoveling or moving heavy slush, locate fuel lines to avoid damaging them. Keep tanks and piping away from high-traffic areas or snow storage zones.

🌬️ Check Your Vent
Ensure your tank vent is clear of snow, ice, or debris.

⛽ Monitor Fuel Use
A sudden, unexplained increase in fuel consumption can be an early sign of a leak.

How to Spot a Spill

Watch for an oily “rainbow” sheen on puddles, water, or snow. You may also notice a strong diesel or heating oil odor near the tank, inside your home, or in crawlspaces.

In the wake of the tragic fire at a nightclub in Switzerland on New Year's Day, many are asking what a flashover fire is.

Flashover is the sudden, simultaneous ignition of everything in a room, and investigators say this is very likely what occurred in the Swiss blaze that left 40 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

Learn more about the incident and which NFPA codes and standards help to protect assembly occupancies such as nightclubs in our latest blog: https://nfpa.social/3LyoQYA
