The Medicare and Medicaid cuts in the Big Ugly Bill have serious effects on those of us in rural New Mexico. "Hospitals and health industry experts have warned that while the fund — $10 billion per year allocated across all states for five years — offers some support to struggling rural hospitals, it won't save them. One reason is that the sum doesn't come close to offsetting the $137 billion that rural hospitals expect to lose over the next decade, according to health research nonprofit KFF." Link in comments

Time to start thinking about getting those mail-in ballots for the June primaries, especially with the changes in the Post Office and if you are family members are overseas. nmvote.org is also a great link to register or check your registration, or if you just have question about voting.

**The mail ballot request portal is now open for the 2026 Primary Election.**

Remember, though, County Clerks cannot begin mailing ballots to voters who have successfully requested one until May 5th (so even if you've already requested one don't expect it to come to you until after that day). The deadline to request a mailed ballot is May 19th.

Mailed ballots must be received by your County Clerk by 7:00 pm on Primary Election Day, June 2nd. Voters have multiple ways to return a mailed ballot:

➡️You can send your ballot back by mail. If mailing your ballot back, we suggest mailing it no later than one week before Election Day to ensure it arrives to your County Clerk no later than 7:00 pm that day.
➡️ You can hand deliver it to your County Clerk's office.
➡️ You can return it through an official election drop box in your county.
➡️ You can bring it to any polling location in your county.

Learn more about voting by mail in New Mexico, including how to track the status of your mailed ballot and how to be placed on the state's permanent absentee list here: https://www.sos.nm.gov/voting-and-elections/voter-information-portal-nmvote-org/absentee-and-early-voting/

"More than fifty research and development facilities across thirty-one states. Gone. Consolidated into a single location in Fort Collins, Colorado. And “consolidated” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence, because what it actually means is that decades of place-based, long-term ecological research — the kind that literally cannot exist anywhere else because it depends on specific forests, specific watersheds, specific ecosystems studied over generations — will be snuffed out."
