Prescribed Fire Planned at Orinda Oaks Park

The City of Orinda and the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) are informing residents that prescribed fire operations are planned at Orinda Oaks Park as part of ongoing wildfire risk reduction efforts.

Over the coming weeks, MOFD crews will conduct prescribed burns to establish and maintain strategic fuel breaks along several ridgelines in Orinda and Moraga. These fuel breaks help reduce wildfire risk by improving evacuation corridors, creating safer operating space for firefighters, and supporting the health of native grassland ecosystems.

Weather and fuel conditions permitting, the first phase of the project is scheduled to begin Monday, June 8, at Orinda Oaks Park near Donald Drive. Burning operations will take place during the cooler morning hours, with crews treating vegetation approximately 100 feet downslope from the roadway. Daily operations are expected to conclude by noon.

MOFD is coordinating closely with the City of Orinda and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the work is conducted safely and with minimal impact to the community.

Residents living near Orinda Oaks Park, particularly along Donald Drive, may see smoke and fire activity during operations and are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed while burning is underway. Motorists traveling on Moraga Way may also notice smoke in the area.

If weather or fuel conditions become unfavorable, the prescribed burn will be postponed.

Project updates and additional information will be posted on MOFD's page and the City of Orinda's social media channels.

Fuel Break Maintenance at Wagner Ranch Elementary Completed

Maintenance work on the North Orinda Shaded Fuel Break adjacent to Wagner Ranch Elementary School was completed today with the assistance of the California Conservation Corps Solano Center crew.

Over the past three weeks, Corps members cleared regrown brush, removed dead and downed trees, and cut back poison oak to reduce wildfire fuels between the school parking lot and Camino Pablo. The crew also removed a significant amount of litter and debris from the project area.
Vegetation generated during the project was stacked into burn piles and will be consumed during a future prescribed fire operation conducted by the Moraga-Orinda Fire District.

This project was funded through a generous grant from Pacific Gas and Electric's Wildfire Resilience Partnerships Program.

Firefighters are finishing up the prescribed fire pile burning this morning at Wagner Ranch Nature Area. A smaller crew will focus on consolidating material into smaller burn piles and mopping up the piles from yesterday's burn. After that, they will remove the 3000-gallon portable water tank and pump and load the 2500 feet of fire hose to be used on the next project. Prescribed fire burning conditions this week have been excellent. The crews used the project as both training and conditioning for what is expected to be a very busy wildland fire season.
