Over the past few days, we have all witnessed the outrage and pain expressed by people in communities across the country following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Police officers’ conduct in Mr. Floyd’s death was criminal, reprehensible and simply wrong. When I and the other members of the Moraga Police watched the video of Mr. Floyd being held on the ground by the Minneapolis officer, we were all physically ill and disgusted by what we saw.
On behalf of the men and women of the Moraga Police Department, I want to express our sincere condolences to Mr. Floyd’s family for their tragic loss. The actions of these officers are inexcusable and are contrary to the core values of law enforcement and the training that our officers receive.
I was fortunate to join other members of the Lamorinda community at the car caravan in remembrance of George Floyd that began at Acalanes High School this morning. I was deeply moved by the number of people who attended and the emotional impact that this incident and Mr. Floyd’s death has had on all of us. I also met with others in Moraga who were peacefully protesting and was able to talk with them about the incident and what was occurring. I am so appreciative of everyone with whom I spoke today and their willingness to spend time sharing thoughts and feelings with me.
I am proud to not only be your Chief of Police, but to be part of the vibrant community that is Moraga. I am blessed to lead a police department that values life and individuals, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. I want to reassure you that the Moraga Police Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality law enforcement services to our community, and doing our jobs in the best way possible, earning the respect and trust of our community each and every day. We value the relationships that we have built with so many in our community and will continue to improve and enhance them. I realize that when something like this occurs, it can damage this trust and respect and we have to work hard and be consistent in our efforts to maintain and rebuild it. This is exactly what we are going to continue to do.
Jon B. King
Chief of Police
