We want to make our community aware that counterfeit U.S. currency has recently been reported in the area. Some of these fake bills have been found to pass a standard counterfeit detection pen test, making them more difficult to identify.
If you own or work at a business that accepts cash, take an extra moment to examine larger bills. Look for security features such as the watermark, security thread, color-shifting ink, and raised printing. Be alert for duplicate serial numbers, unusual paper texture, or printing that appears blurry or inconsistent.
If you believe you've received a counterfeit bill, do not return it to the person who passed it or attempt to confront them. Instead, safely note the person's description, any vehicle information, and preserve any surveillance footage or receipts that may assist with an investigation. Then contact law enforcement as soon as possible.
Counterfeit currency impacts local businesses and our community. Taking a few extra seconds to inspect cash can help prevent additional incidents and aid in identifying those responsible.
