It is HOT outside - even for August along the coast. We'd like to remind you to never leave a person or pet inside a parked vehicle! You might think you're going to just pop inside the store or house quickly, but that short timeframe can lead to serious heat impacts. You should always check all seats in your car to make sure your passengers are safely out before you turn off the car and walk away.

Morehead City Fire-EMS took these pictures at 12:55 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13. The outside temperature was 89° Fahrenheit, with real feel at 105°.

The first picture shows the thermometer at 152.8° degrees, but the interior vehicle temperature actually reached to 157°+ degrees with the doors shut for approximately two minutes.

Once the passenger side door was left open for one minute, it dropped to 113.7 degrees.

As we experience this heat, don't forget to take steps to stay cool. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and if you're outside, take frequent breaks in shade, or preferably air conditioning. Morehead City Fire-EMS, and all of Morehead City Government, would like to express our sincere condolences to Nash County EMS and Nash County Government in the loss of Dale Griffin, who was their Emergency Medical Services Director. We will continue to think of his loved ones and be available to support however we can in the days and weeks ahead.

He passed away in Carteret County this weekend, and our crews were among those who helped guide him home on Sunday, Aug. 9. The honor processional started at Carteret Health Care, and numerous departments throughout the county paid their respects as it traveled throughout Morehead City and Newport to the Craven County line, where their first responders took it throughout their jurisdiction.

We will continue to keep his family, friends and colleagues close to our hearts as they navigate through this time.

Sunday, Aug. 9
Processional in honor of Dale Griffin, Nash County EMS Director

An honor processional will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, for Dale Griffin, Nash County EMS Director, who passed away in Carteret County this weekend. Morehead City Fire-EMS will be in front of Stations 2 and 3 in a show of support and to honor him. We encourage others to be along the route to show their support to his many loved ones as he returns home.

According to Carteret County Emergency Management, the processional will start at Carteret Health Care on the Bridges Street side, down 35th next to the hospital, and then along Arendell Street/Highway 70 to the county line, where Craven County will take it through their jurisdiction.

We would like to express our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time and are here to support in any way we can.

We ask that anyone along the route yield safely to the processional while it is en route.

The roadway is open to motorists. No other details are available at this time.

10 p.m.
Hwy. 70 westbound is shut down past Old Murdoch Road, due to a motor vehicle collision. Currently, Morehead City Police are turning traffic around by Old Murdoch Road and motorists are being advised to use Hwy. 24 for westbound traffic. Morehead City First Responders are on scene and waiting for Highway Patrol to respond as well. There are no other details available at this time.
