Please use caution when driving around Morehead City, as the recent storm has left standing water in many areas, including around the intersection of 15th and Bridges streets. Remember - turn around, don’t drown! It only takes a few inches of water to move a car.

Both lanes of traffic have reopened on the bridge. Traffic delays may linger until traffic flow resumes to normal pace.

6:55 p.m.
A multi-motor vehicle collision has both lanes of the Newport River High Rise Bridge between Morehead City and Radio Island closed at this time. When it is possible, one lane will be open to alternate traffic. Please anticipate delays until the scene can be cleared.

Due to utility work, westbound traffic is down to one lane along Bridges Street Extension, west of Country Club Road. As always, we encourage you to drive carefully and stay alert while behind the wheel.

K9 Ranger, K9 Boomer and K9 Horan would like to remind you to get outside and get some exercise with your four-legged friends today.

With students back to school, it’s also a good time for an extra reminder: slow down, stay alert and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Kids may be walking or biking to school, crossing streets or waiting near roadways and bus stops.

The scene has been cleared and traffic is moving again on the westbound lane, but it will still take some time to fully clear and resume normal traffic flow. Traffic is currently stop and go, so please drive carefully and remain alert.

9:15 a.m. post:
A motor vehicle collision on the Newport River High Rise Bridge between downtown Morehead City and Radio Island has westbound traffic blocked at this time. Anticipate delays until the scene can be cleared. No injuries have been reported as a result.

Traffic is currently impacted by a motor vehicle collision behind Walmart, on HWY 24. First responders are on scene and you are encouraged to seek an alternate route until the scene is cleared. Both westbound lanes are currently closed. Anticipate traffic delays in the meantime.
