The Mackinac Bridge toll is the price Michigan charges to cross one of the most spectacular engineering achievements in the Western Hemisphere and by any reasonable measure it is one of the better deals available anywhere in the state. Crossing five miles of suspension bridge over the Straits of Mackinac where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet, with two Great Lakes visible simultaneously and 552 foot towers rising above you and the Upper Peninsula waiting on the other side, currently costs passenger vehicles four dollars and fifty cents. Michigan built something extraordinary and is charging approximately what a cup of coffee costs to experience it.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority has operated the toll since the bridge opened in 1957 and the revenue funds the ongoing maintenance, inspection, and operation of a structure that requires continuous attention from workers who climb those towers and walk those cables in conditions that most people would find genuinely alarming. The toll pays for the bridge painting operation that never actually finishes. It pays for the workers who maintain 42,000 miles of wire in the main cables. It pays for the inspections that keep a structure carrying millions of vehicles annually safe enough to trust with the weight of everything crossing it.

The toll plaza itself is a specific Michigan experience that marks the transition between peninsulas in a way that feels appropriate. You slow down, you pay, you cross, and somewhere in the middle of those five miles something shifts. The Lower Peninsula is behind you. The Upper Peninsula is ahead. Two Great Lakes are below. The toll booth was the last ordinary thing that happened and everything after it is Michigan at its most extraordinary. Four dollars and fifty cents. Worth every penny and then some.

Harrier Jet Flyover Scheduled for Friday 3:45-5:15 pm

The Harrier Jet, only flown out of Cherry Point, is being sundowned in June. To celebrate more than 40 years of service, Harrier pilots will be doing a flyover of Carteret and Craven counties tomorrow, Friday May 15, from 3:45 to 5:15 pm.

We encourage the community to go out, witness, support, and wave at the pilots as they fly over Carteret County!
