Historical Photo Friday! The original Dixie Grill and Jack West Whiskey. 1930's.
Rowan County was wet prior to 1887. After the Martin- Tolliver feud ended, the Kentucky Legislature blamed alcohol on the violence of the feud and banned liquor. In 1898 the county became wet again until prohibition shut it down again until 1933 when prohibition was repealed. In 1938, state law went into effect that stated liquor stores could not operate out side city limits. Fear of liquor stores taking over the city, the county voted to go dry in 1943. Morehead voted to allow alcohol sales again in 1982. Rowan County is considered a "moist" county - the city is wet and the county is dry.

11/24/2020

We have a very special announcement to make!
WE WILL BE CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY BUT....

Thursday, Thanksgiving day Toby, myself and the kids will be at the store from 1pm-3pm (or when the food runs out) offering up thanksgiving meals to anyone in need. If you know of a family, elderly individuals who may not be able to fix their own meals or simply someone who doesn’t have anyone else to lend a hand please send them our way. Your confidentiality is also important to us and if you would like to call ahead or call us from the parking lot we will be happy to even bring it out to your vehicle.
We have had some very special individuals who have offered up some financial assistance to make this happen!
So please if you aren’t going go have a meal come and see us!

Also, if you know of a family who wouldn’t necessarily make the trip out and would like to pick up and drop off a meal to someone please do so!

Tech Startups Drop Stay-Private Mantra as Wall Street Beckons

Over the past decade, many tech entrepreneurs couldn’t be bothered to go public, as they had an ever-expanding availability of private capital for their funding needs. But some are now finding public markets more appealing.

We’re excited about the announcement of Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Ryan Quarles, unveiling a new Appalachia Proud logo today at the virtual SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) Summit. The new logo aims to better capture the landscape of the Appalachian region and represent the unique culture and fiercely independent spirit of Eastern Kentucky. We hope you like it as much as we do!

One week ago was the day many of us in EKY have been waiting on. AppHarvest has been a project the Morehead-Rowan EDC is very proud of. While working closely with the CEO, Jonathan Webb and all the other hard working employees on the team; we have grown a relationship that will last a lifetime and have got to witness firsthand what this company is going to do for our area.
It’s truly breathtaking to see this greenhouse farm and industry!
We are now labeled the AgTech capital of the world!
Investors, board members, the AppHarvest team, Rocky Adkins, and even the United States Ambassador to the United Nations spoke on behalf of the success to come.
This has drawn the attention we need and deserve in the Appalachian region.
One could only imagine what it would look like; to see the real thing is beyond belief.
What AppHarvest is doing for the Appalachian region is nothing short of making history!
Bringing over 300 jobs to this region is something we need with the amount of workforce we have! Not to mention the use of sustainability, increased food production, and partnerships with educating students are all positive outcomes of AppHarvest!
We are beyond thankful they chose Morehead, Kentucky as their stomping grounds for their first of many greenhouses!
We can’t wait to see the great things that are to come!

This is truly amazing!

ARC is working with AppHarvest to develop a program allowing men and women in recovery to be trained to work in their greenhouses. AppHarvest recognizes the importance of hiring those in recovery and anticipates interviewing ARC clients moving from Crisis to Career.

You’re doing great things Gateway!

Gateway Area Development District has received $50,000 from Appalachian Regional Commission's POWER Initiative! We'll use this to complete the Gateway Regional Workforce Development Plan to identify the strategies, objectives, and actions to implement training programs to meet the skillset needs and expand the capacity of the regional workforce. This project is one of 51 recently announced POWER projects aimed at strengthening and diversifying Appalachia's coal-impacted communities.
