Rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are anticipated during the afternoon and evening hours, mainly south of the I-64 corridor. Damaging wind gusts and torrential/heavy rain are the primary risks. Hail under an inch is also possible.

Severe weather can happen anytime in Morehead and across Rowan County, especially during summer storms. Today is a great reminder to stay alert, have a plan, and be ready.

Make a Plan
Identify a safe place (basement or interior room, away from windows)

Build an Emergency Kit
Water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries
First aid kit and important documents in waterproof storage

Flood Safety (Important for Our Area)
Never drive through flooded roads — Turn Around, Don’t Drown
Know low-lying areas and move to higher ground if flooding begins

During a Storm
Stay inside and away from windows
Avoid using electrical appliances during lightning
Watch for downed power lines after storms

Local Reminder: Rowan County is especially vulnerable to flash flooding and strong storms, so staying informed and prepared can make all the difference.

TRAFFIC ALERT – MAIN STREET CLOSURE

Main Street will be closed Friday, June 12, 2026, starting at 2:00 p.m. for the Morehead Criterium Bike Race

Please note:
• No parking on Main Street after 2:00 p.m.
• Vehicles will not be able to exit during the race
• Use Virginia Avenue for detour access
• Second Street and US 60 will remain accessible

Plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and come out to cheer on the riders!

The MFD conducts daily training sessions for its combination department, comprising full-time, part-time, and volunteer members. On Monday nights, the part-time and volunteer members join the on-duty crew for training. The focus of tonight's training was high-rise standpipe operations at Morehead State University.
