As we begin the month of June, we pause to honor the CAL FIRE personnel who gave their lives in service to California during this month throughout history.

Their dedication came at the highest cost. We honor their sacrifice, remember their stories, and recognize the enduring impact they have left on our department and the communities they served.

Wildland fires can be complex, that's why our firefighters have multiple different ways to fight them. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

When combating wildfire, CAL FIRE employs a range of operational strategies that are situationally based and generally fall into three categories:
๐Ÿš’ Direct attack: Firefighters working along the fires edge, using hoses, hand tools, and engines to stop the fire from spreading.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ Indirect attack: Firefighters working far ahead of the fire front, using dozer lines and hand lines to build wide and strategic contingency and control lines, organizing firing operations to build buffer in areas that we can control while also steering the fire safely away from homes and communities.
๐Ÿš Air support: Helicopters conduct water drops while fixed wing aircraft apply fire retardant to slow the fireโ€™s spread, allowing firefighters on the ground to suppress the fire.

Every fire is different, making it critical to use the strategy (or strategies) that will be most effective in protecting lives, property, and natural resources.

๐ŸŽ‰HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!๐ŸŽ‰
The CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit is proud to congratulate our two newest Heavy Fire Equipment Operators (HFEO) who graduated from the CAL FIRE HFEO Academy this morning in Ione, CA! ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿšœ
HFEO Daniels and HFEO McKinley!
Why are CAL FIRE Bulldozers so critical?
When wildfires happen, our HFEOs and their dozers are an indispensable part of our firefighting strategy. They operate under extreme conditions to do some heavy lifting on the fireline:
๐Ÿ”ฅ Creating Containment Lines: They scrape away heavy brush and vegetation down to the bare mineral soil, effectively cutting off the fireโ€™s fuel supply.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protecting Communities: By working directly along the fireโ€™s edge and pushing ahead of advancing flames, these HFEOs build the the lines necessary to keep fires contained and protect our neighborhoods, infrastructure, and natural resources๐Ÿก.
A huge congratulations to all of the and graduates this morning! Your hard work, skill, and dedication are what keep California protected. Stay safe out there! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘

Wildfire resilience is critical for California.

According to new research from UC Davis that analyzed nearly 300 wildfires across the western United States, every dollar spent on forest fuels treatment saves about $3.75 in wildfire damages.

is continuing to work alongside our partners to increase the pace and scale of landscape resilience projects across California. Through strategic fuels reduction, prescribed fire, and cultural burning, weโ€™re helping reduce wildfire intensity, protect communities, and improve the long-term health of our forests.
