I was recently asked "what causes the most fires during the winter?".

Rather than regurgitating the NFPA press releases, I thought I’d reach back to my own experiences in the Fire Service over the past 35 years and share what sticks out to me.

Of course, space heaters, extension cords, turkey fryers, and all of those things are up there, but there’s one that might surprise you...and it doesn’t get much press.

>>USING DROP LIGHTS, HEAT LAMPS, SPACE HEATERS, etc., TO HEAT A PET SLEEPING AREA...aka A DOG HOUSENEVER>UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES should you put a light, heat lamp, or space heater in or near a dog house. Dog's have a way of messing with that stuff that results in fires on a regular basis! Those things also put off WAY more heat than your pet needs.

If you feel that Fido needs a warmer casa, here are some safe suggestions:

• Don’t build a BIG dog house. A dog’s own body heat can very
effectively warm an area if it’s not too big
• Ensure that eaves, corners, etc., are sealed to keep heat in and
wind out
• Add insulation in the walls, floors, and roof
• Add a doggy door
• Add a bed
• Keep the floor of the house off the ground
