Attention! There is a scam going around where a caller will claim to be a Deputy or Investigator from the Union County Sheriff's Office. Lately, the name they've been using is "Deputy Hall". We DO NOT have a Deputy Hall on our roster. Even IF they do use the name of an active Deputy Sheriff do not fall for it. HANG UP and CALL US!
This is not the only scam. There are dozens upon dozens of creative ways to relieve you of your money.
A FEW POINTS:
ALWAYS ask questions. IF anyone calls you, requesting money or personal information, whether claiming to be from our office or not, do not give it to them. Hang up and call the local Sheriff's Office number, never use a number they provide. You should always be leery of anyone reaching out to you about business you are not familiar with. We will not call you if we have a warrant for your arrest. We conduct that business face to face. We DO NOT take fine payments. Ever. That is done through the Circuit Court Clerks Office. They DO NOT request payment by Bit Coin, Chime cards, or any other unconventional means.
Listen, I am continually blown away by people that simply throw their money at these scammers with little to no questioning what so ever. You must understand, once you have completed the transaction and broken contact with them there is very often nothing that can be done to recover your assets. These people are using technology that is difficult, at best, to trace and they are quite often in other (rather unhelpful) countries. Truly, the best defense is to just not fall for their scam. I would absolutely love nothing more than to put the cuffs on these people myself but YOU are the first line of defense. Please, if your’e reading this, remember it and DO pass it along to everyone you know. It seems our senior citizens are often targets of these scams more than anyone. If you know someone that falls in that category then please have conversations about what phone calls and or mail they are receiving. You may save them not just thousands of dollars but their quality of life as well.
Thank you
Sincerely, Sheriff Jason O. Thomas
