From the Office of The Burke County Fire Marshal
Burning Advisory and High Wind Safety Notice – Burke County
Due to current and forecasted atmospheric conditions, the Burke County Fire Marshal’s Office is recommending that all outdoor burning be postponed until conditions improve.
A combination of dry weather, low humidity, and strong winds has created conditions in which outdoor fires can spread quickly and cause significant damage. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible in some areas of Burke County.
Residents and visitors are urged to use extreme caution when using outdoor campfires, fire pits, smokers, grills, or any appliance that produces heat or an open flame. Extra care should be taken when disposing of ashes from fireplaces, woodstoves, and cooking appliances, as hot embers can remain dangerous long after a fire appears to be out.
High winds may also result in downed trees, utility lines, and electrical power lines.
If you encounter a downed power line, please call 911 immediately. Never attempt to move or drive over any utility or power line. Always assume lines are energized, even if there is no visible sparking. Stay at least 30 feet away, as electricity can travel through wet ground or standing water, extending the danger zone.
If a power line falls on your vehicle, please stay calm and stay inside the car. Do not touch metal surfaces. Call 911 and wait for help to arrive. The vehicle’s tires can help insulate you from electrical current.
Please be sure to use caution and help keep Burke County safe by sharing this information with others.
