This summer, Good Books had the opportunity to host an intern through OPT-IN: Opportunity Internship, a Work in Burke program designed to help young people gain valuable workplace experience and explore their career interests.

After graduating from Burke Middle College with both his high school diploma and an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Accounting & Finance, our intern, Alexander Christopher, decided to join the OPT-IN program and spend his summer with us!

During his time with OPT-IN, Alexander says his favorite part of the internship was the fun atmosphere and the sense of community he found along the way. Now, he’s ready for what’s next, pursuing opportunities in accounting while continuing to explore his interests in content creation, writing, and finance.

Congratulations, Alexander! We’re proud of all you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see where your next chapter takes you. 🌟🎉🙌

No two days ever look the same for us at Good Books...but here's a run down of what you might expect a typical day-in the-life might be like.

Mornings usually start with kid drop-offs (we benefit from flexible schedules that accommodate our needs!) then coffee and a quick scan of emails to figuring out what needs attention before diving into the numbers that keep everything running behind the scenes.

Most of the day is a mix of reconciling accounts, tracking down details, cleaning up transactions, and making sure everything is categorized correctly so the story the numbers tell is accurate.

There’s also a good bit of collaboration, checking in with team members on budgets, answering questions, and helping people understand where things stand financially so they can make business decisions with confidence.

In between the focus time and quickbooks, there’s a lot of small but meaningful work that helps provide financial clarity to suppot businesses of all sizes and types.

🚨Pisgah legal needs your help!

Pisgah Legal Services and our partners are hosting clinics to assist our immigrant neighbors starting this month and continuing into 2025. We are seeking bilingual volunteers to assist with interpretation, as well as volunteer notaries. If you are fluent in Spanish and English or are an NC Notary Public and are interested in helping, please signup online at https://forms.gle/TufjfTtostF6tdaY6 to indicate your skills and availability. The first clinics are tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, Dec 15 and the evening of Wednesday, Dec 18.

We would like to provide a light dinner for our immigrant neighbors and our volunteers at these clinics. If you can provide sandwiches, fruit, salad, or other items for these events, please contact Katie Russell, [email protected]. Food can be dropped off in advance.
