Gilboa Methodist Church opened its doors on a beautiful September Day to friends new and old. The church and cemetery were on the Burke County Historic Sites Tour, organized by America 250- Burke County. Guests were greeted inside the church by Marsha Riddle and Carol Lancaster for a brief summary of the church's history. Guests walked through the Cemetery and Susan Houck shared the stories of the folks buried there. The Historic Gilboa Foundation, Inc. were honored to be included on this tour, sharing the history of the oldest standing Methodist Church now in their care. On August 5, 2025 Ryan Sparks from the Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina met Susan Amico and Carol Lancaster to explore the Gilboa Spring. What a wonderful misty morning to walk through the woods, identifying trees and plants. Our dream is to care for this special path and post markers so all who travel down to the spring can enjoy and learn. Thank you, Ryan, for your generosity of time and knowledge. He identified; White Oak, Cherry, Big Hickory, Native Holly, Black Cherry, Live Oak, Big Leaf Hickory, Scarlet Oak, Black Gum, Southern Red Oak (Turkey Foot) Scarlet Oak, Black Gum, Virginia Pine, Post Oak, Bass Wood, Sourwood, Red Maple, Box Elder, Cedar, Sourwood, Maple. If you are intersted in donating an iron bench to the Gilboa Spring, please let us know. [email protected].
