🚨A common misconception is that a Burn Ban is lifted when it rains. This is false. Rain, regardless of how much, does not automatically lift or cancel out a Burn Ban. Please check reliable sources prior to resuming open burning activities.

⚠️The Local Burn Ban that was issued for Burke County for all open burning on March 28, 2026 at 6:00 PM, remains in effect until further notice. The Burke County Local Burn Ban is concurrent with the NC Forest Service Statewide Burn Ban.

✅Please postpone any open burning until atmospheric conditions improve. Citations are being issued for Burn Ban violations.

Morganton, NC March 20, 2026

The West End Volunteer Fire Department annual safety certification for its Scott Air-Pak fleet. Specialized testing, including computerized flow tests and PASS device calibration, was conducted by Simon Carter of Rhinehart Fire Services.

"These units are fundamental to our operations," said Assistant Chief Jeremy Allen. "Yesterday’s testing ensures that when our crews enter hazardous environments, their gear performs to its exact engineering specifications. This precision is essential for the safety of our firefighters."

To supplement this annual audit, equipment is checked during daily truck inspections. Captain W. Brian McElrath manages the department’s SCBA program, overseeing maintenance, repairs, and procurement to ensure every unit is mission-ready or immediately repaired if a defect is found.

By prioritizing both daily oversight and expert third-party testing, the West End Volunteer Fire Department continues its commitment to the safety of its members and the Burke County community.

Morganton, NC — February 25, 2026
Assistant Chief Jon Lowdermilk Shares Recovery Update and Extends Thanks to First Responders.

Following a recent workplace injury, Assistant Chief Jon Lowdermilk is sharing a positive update on his recovery journey and extending a sincere thank you to the community and fellow first responders.

Currently receiving care at WakeMed Rehabilitation, Chief Lowdermilk is scheduled to be discharged on March 6th. He has shown encouraging improvements in sensation while undergoing three to four hours of intensive therapy every day.

“I am is still at WakeMed in rehab and scheduled to be discharged on March 6th. I have been showing some improvements with sensation. I've been going to three to four hours of therapy every day. I will be facing possible two surgeries in the future. One on my back and one on the right knee. Will follow-up with surgeons after discharge. Hope to see everyone soon. I cannot thank everyone enough for all the thoughts, prayers and support that has been shown to me and my family. Again thank you and God bless all of you. ”
