Remember when the North Carolina Republican Party passed a provision in the 2023 state budget that cut off public access to records from state legislators and their staff. It says lawmakers can decide for themselves what to make public and which documents to delete.

The constitutional amendments on this years ballots… let’s discuss!

Read the fine print before you vote on Amendments 1 and 2.

They sound like tax relief. But here's what they actually do:

🔹 The income tax cap locks the state's top rate at 3.5% in the constitution. The rate is already heading to 3.49%, so it wouldn't lower your taxes. It would stop the state from raising revenue later, even in a crisis, without another statewide vote.

🔹 The property tax limit requires new limits on local levies, but doesn't say what the limits are. Lawmakers write the formula after you vote.

Here's the catch for rural counties. Local taxes help pay for your schools, and local governments already fund more than 6,200 teaching positions the state doesn't cover. If the state has less to spend and your county can't raise what it needs, someone has to make up the difference: cuts, fees, or bigger classes.

You don't have to be against lower taxes to ask: what gets cut, and who decides?

REMINDER

Nine months after WHATLEY was named recovery czar, only 9% of needs had been met in Western NC, versus over 70% federal cost-share after storms like Katrina, Maria, and Sandy.

More than 100 Western North Carolinians called for his removal from the FEMA Review Council and protested a closed-door “listening session,” and reporting described him as rarely visible in the disaster zone.

Whatley often calls himself a “son of western North Carolina” and says he “grew up” in Blowing Rock, but records show he was born in Michigan and only lived in Blowing Rock roughly three years during high school before moving elsewhere in the state for college.
