BURKE COUNTY SHERIFF OFFERS SAFETY REMINDERS FOR THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON

Sheriff Banks Hinceman of Burke County hopes this school year gets off to a great start! Many parents may be nervous going into the school year, especially if their little one is attending school for the very first time. To help ease their minds, Sheriff Hinceman has some practical tips and skills that parents can share with their kids before they start the school year.

“Summer break is coming to an end in Burke County, and we are so excited to see students get back to the books,” Sheriff Hinceman commented, “We work hard to ensure our schools and students are safe, but there are ways that students and their parents can work together to help make them aware of potential dangers.”

Before they head off to campus, Sheriff Hinceman suggests that parents check the location sharing settings on their children’s electronic devices to make sure that their location is not being shared with any unwanted applications or individuals. “This is also a great time to remind students of the dangers of sharing personal information on social media or other platforms. It is important to teach young people that sharing certain information, especially their location, may put them and their classmates at risk,” Sheriff Hinceman added.

Take some time to give the following tips to your children before they head off to school for the academic year:

Before starting school, young children should:

*Know the phone number of a parent or guardian
*Know how to reach their parent or guardian at work
*Know their home address
*Know how to dial 911 in an emergency

If your child walks to school, make sure they:

*Walk with a buddy
*Stay on sidewalks
*Obey traffic signals and stay in designated crosswalks

If your teenager is driving to school, make sure they:

*Wear their seatbelt
*Never use their cell phone while driving
*Have up to date insurance and registration information in their vehicle

Children should try to avoid engaging with strangers, and follow these guidelines:

*Never talk to strangers
*Never accept a ride from someone you do not know
*Establish a family code word. If someone claims to know your family but does not know the code, leave the situation immediately.

Taking the time to educate children about these situations can help ensure their safety throughout the school year and into the future. On behalf of Sheriff Hinceman and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, have a fun and safe school year!

Hickory National Night Out and the Waldensian Festival

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office was proud to get out into the community and participate in two great events this past week!

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, we were honored to join the Hickory Police Department for their National Night Out celebration. Events like National Night Out give law enforcement the opportunity to connect with the community, meet local families and strengthen the relationships that help make our communities safer and stronger.

Then, on Saturday, August 8, Sheriff Hinceman and several of our deputies joined the fun at the Waldensian Festival! It was a wonderful day filled with fellowship, community spirit and plenty of opportunities to meet and visit with the people we are proud to serve.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office appreciates every opportunity to step out from behind the badge and spend time with the members of our community. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit with us, and to the organizers who invited us to be a part of these wonderful events!

We are always proud to serve our community and look forward to seeing you at the next event!

Back to School Safety Tips

📚✏️ Back to School Means Back to Safety! 🚌🚸

As students, teachers and school staff head back to the classroom, the Burke County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to slow down and stay alert.

Here are a few important reminders:

🛑 Stop for school buses. North Carolina law requires drivers to stop for a stopped school bus displaying its flashing red lights and extended stop arm unless you are traveling on the opposite side of a divided highway with a median.

🚸 Slow down in school zones. Watch your speed, obey crossing guards and be prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.

📵 Put the phone down. Distracted driving puts everyone at risk. Stay focused, especially in school zones and neighborhoods.

🚶 Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Give children plenty of space and be extra cautious during the morning and afternoon commute.

⏰ Leave a few minutes early. Giving yourself extra time can help reduce the temptation to speed or drive aggressively.

To our students, parents, teachers, bus drivers and school staff—we hope you have a safe, successful, and exciting school year!

Let's all do our part to make this school year a safe one. Together, we can help ensure every child arrives at school and returns home safely.
