Do you have questions about Preschool/Head Start in Monongalia County? Check out our Q and A below. If you have additional questions, leave them in the comments or send us a message!

Q: Is my child eligible for Preschool?

A: Your child may be eligible! Monongalia County Schools Preschool/Head Start serves children who are 4 years old on or before June 30th, 2026. Additionally, 3 year olds who complete the Early Head Start program and children 3 years of age and up who qualify for preschool special needs services are also eligible. We'd love to help you determine if your child is eligible!

Q: What do I need to do to apply?

A: Applying is easy! Simply complete an application and provide the required documents. You can apply online at www.preschoolsteps.org or in person at the Monongalia County Schools BOE at 1751 Earl L Core Road ( ask for early childhood department). Our staff is here to guide you every step of the way and answer any questions you may have.

Q: Can I still apply if I don't have a birth certificate?

A: Yes! We highly encourage families to begin the application process even if you're still gathering documents. Our staff can help you determine what other record may be accepted while you obtain an official birth certificate. We also have applications for the Certificate of Live Birth if you need one and can also give you the information for how to order online.

Q: What's the difference between Head Start and Preschool?

A: Both programs provide high-quality early learning experiences and reside within the same classrooms in each elementary school, but Head Start offers additional services that support the whole family, including health screenings, family engagement, and connections to community resources. During enrollment, we'll help determine if you might be eligible for these additional services.

Q: How do I qualify for Head Start?

A: Head Start eligibility is based on several factors. Families who meet income guidelines, receive certain public benefits, taking care of a child in kinship or foster care, or have other qualifying situations may be eligible.

Q: What documents do I need?

A: ✅ Child's certificate of live birth (the state copy from vital registration)

✅ Proof of residency (a bill with your name and address works)

✅ Immunization records (we can help you figure out how to obtain these)

✅ Proof of income like a W2, tax form 1040, pay stub, snap card or letter, ssi letter, foster care verification etc.(for Head Start eligibility)

✅ A updated well child check and dental exam are required at the beginning of the school year

Q: Is it too late to apply?

A: It's definitely not too late! We encourage families to apply as soon as possible. If classrooms are full, your child may be placed on a waiting list, and openings often become available throughout the school year.
