Day 2 of Large Animal Technical Rescue class was packed with hands-on learning and real-world scenarios.
We started by diving into fire dynamics in barn fires and gave everyone a chance to learn (or refresh) how to properly use a fire extinguisher. We also tested a new fire retardant spray designed to help slow the spread of barn fires when applied early.
The rest of the day focused on moving and lifting techniques using both manpower and equipment. Scenarios progressed throughout the day—from rescuing a horse stuck in a hole, to a more challenging situation with a horse trapped in the mud (yes, students had to get in there just like the real thing!), and finally ending with a horse that had fallen through a bridge, requiring a full vertical lift using rescue equipment.
Huge thank you to Gather Around BBQ for providing dinner!
Day 3 of the Technical Large Animal Rescue class focused on realistic, high-pressure scenarios and teamwork.
The morning was spent training on barn fire situations and the safest, most effective ways to evacuate animals. With the use of training smoke, visibility was reduced to simulate real conditions. Horses were led out by responders in full firefighting gear—helping firefighters learn how to safely operate around animals, while also conditioning the horses to stay calm around what can otherwise be an intimidating sight.
In the afternoon, students tackled a simulated trailer rollover accident involving a trapped horse mannequin. They learned how to stabilize shifting trailer gates and safely remove the animal using proper rescue techniques.
A big thank you to Michelle Comstock for the use of her barn, Jamie Sichting and Denny Bryant for donating the trailers, and the Johnson County Fair for providing facilities for this weekend’s training.
