Central Tri-County Soil & Water Conservation District

Central Tri-County Soil & Water Conservation District We have changed our name! We still offer the same programs, are still located in Moriarty, and have the same staff!

The Central Tri-County SWCD aims to engage the cooperation of landowners and land users in carrying out practices and policies listed in the Soil Conservation Act. The Central Tri-County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is dedicated to protecting and conserving the environment through sustainable projects, education, and collaboration with stakeholders. The Central Tri-County SWCD covers

513,860 acres in southern Santa Fe, eastern Bernalillo, and northern Torrance counties of central New Mexico. This includes 23,686 acres of the Chilili Land Grant and 26,325 acres of the Pueblo of Isleta. A referendum for the formation of the District was carried by popular vote of landowners, as provided in the New Mexico Soil & Water Conservation District Law. The Certificate of Organization was issued on September 27, 1941 and has been helping landowners ever since.

This tip sheet is meant to help families prepare for the upcoming wildfire and flood season in New Mexico.

It’s not about fear—just being practical and ready.

In the last two years we’ve seen how quickly a natural disaster can disrupt daily life: power outages, loss of cell service, roads and homes impacted.

For example, recent flash flooding in Ruidoso left more than a thousand customers without power at one point, and mud and debris blocked streets as crews worked to reopen them.

Anyone who has been involved with fires or floods in Ruidoso knows firsthand how real these challenges are.

So, this sheet is simply a practical reminder to check your communication plan, emergency kit, and important documents now—before something happens.

In the National Guard, we train and drill constantly so we can respond when needed.

That’s why our tagline is Always Ready, Always There.

Use the checklist, talk it over with your family, and take one small step today. It could make a big difference tomorrow.
