Torrance County Fire Rescue is proud to host our Firefighter I & II Recruit Class 2026-1.

These dedicated recruits have been working hard by studying the Firefighter curriculum, completing quizzes, and applying their knowledge through hands-on training on the drill field. Their commitment and determination continue to prepare them for the challenges and responsibilities of the fire service.

Next month, this group will travel to the New Mexico State Fire Academy to complete the final phase of their training and take their certification examinations. Upon successful completion, they will be sworn in as firefighters and begin serving the citizens of Torrance County and surrounding communities.

We are proud of the effort and professionalism these recruits have demonstrated and look forward to welcoming them into the fire service. Please join us in wishing them success as they take this important next step in their firefighting careers.

Over the past two months, our crews have remained committed to professional development by attending multiple courses through the New Mexico State Fire Academy.

Earning these certifications requires a significant amount of dedication and hard work. Students complete classroom lectures, hands-on skills training, and comprehensive final evaluations that include both written and practical examinations.

These courses are challenging, but the learning does not stop once the certification is earned. The true test begins when our firefighters return to the department and apply their knowledge and skills to serve our community during emergencies.

We are proud of the commitment our personnel continue to demonstrate in advancing their education and maintaining the highest standards of service.

Please join us in congratulating:

Torrance County Fire personnel underwent training with the New Mexico State Fire Academy this week, learning innovative rescue methods. This certification program enables students to meet national standards for emergency rescues. With frequent accidents on I-40, US60, and 285, our team relies on the 'Jaws of Life' to rescue patients. We thank the instructors and U Pull & Pay in Albuquerque for facilitating our training.

In response to a mutual aid request from Encino Fire, Torrance County Fire crews attended a wildfire that was spreading rapidly and discovered approximately 100 acres had been consumed by flames. Additional assistance was requested from Vaughn Fire Department, Mountainair Fire, Santa Rosa Fire, New Mexico State Forestry, and US Forestry. The county's support was instrumental, as their graders played a crucial role in constructing a firebreak to halt the rapid spread of the fire. Following containment efforts, the fire's extent was determined to be 556 acres. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries and posed no threat to homes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. As a precautionary measure, a statewide fire ban is currently in effect.
