Water Before a Freeze: The Counterintuitive Gardening Tip That Saves Plants

The forecast says 10ยฐF tonight. Youโ€™ve covered your plantsโ€”but did you remember to water them? It sounds crazy to water a garden before a freeze, but you should do it anyway. For many plants, a โ€œWinter Droughtโ€ is more deadly than the cold itself.

Hereโ€™s the science behind this vital practice, known as Hydric Insulation.

The Science: Why Wet Soil Protects Roots
1. The Thermal Battery
Water holds heat; air does not. Dry soil is full of insulating air pockets that allow cold to pe*****te deeply and quickly. Wet soil, however, acts like a radiator. Because water has a high specific heat capacity, moist soil releases stored ground warmth much more slowly than dry soil. This keeps the root zone warmer for longer.

2. The โ€œLatent Heatโ€ Trick
This is a key physics principle: When water freezes, it releases energy in the form of latent heat of fusion. This release of heat actually warms the immediate soil environment around the roots. As the water in the soil turns to ice, it creates a temporary thermal buffer that helps prevent the root ball from reaching lethal temperatures.

3. Preventing โ€œWind Burnโ€ and Desiccation
In a Bomb Cyclone or harsh winter wind, evergreens (like Boxwoods and Hollies) lose moisture rapidly from their leaves. If the soil is dry and frozen, the roots cannot replace that lost water. The plant essentially freeze-dries (desiccates). Hydrated roots can support hydrated leaves, creating resilience against drying winds.

The Protocol: How to Water Before a Freeze
WHEN: Today, during the warmest part of the day, before the freeze sets in tonight.

WHERE: Focus on the root zone (base of the plant). Do not spray the foliage.

HOW MUCH: Give the soil a good, deep soak. Aim for moist, not waterlogged or swampy. Youโ€™re filling the soilโ€™s โ€œthermal tankโ€ before the storm.

Quick FAQ
Q: Wonโ€™t the water turn to ice and crush the roots?
A: No. Plant roots are resilient and can handle normal soil expansion. The greater danger is the deep, rapid freeze that occurs in dry, airy soil. Ice formation in soil is porous and can actually provide insulating protection.

Q: Should I spray the leaves to create a protective โ€œice coatโ€?
A: Absolutely not. This technique is for professional citrus growers with specialized equipment. For most ornamental shrubs, the weight of the ice will snap branches. Water the soil only.

Q: Does this apply to dormant perennials (like Hostas)?
A: Yes, though itโ€™s less critical. Dormant plants are asleep, but dry soil still freezes deeper and faster. A moist bed provides better insulation for the dormant crown and roots.

Bottom Line: Donโ€™t just cover your plantsโ€”water them. Itโ€™s a simple step that uses basic plant science to provide a critical layer of protection against freezing temperatures and deadly winter drought.

PLANT FOR POLLINATORS DAY 29
LEMON BEE BALM
Monarda citriodora
Family: Lamiaceae (Mint Family)

Fragrant annual, with a distinctive lemon-like scent. If it receives enough moisture, a plant will bloom throughout the summer. Forms large masses. May be transplanted. Grows easily from seed. Allow seed heads to become dry and brown before collecting seeds. Plants must be allowed to reseed in order to have plants the following year.

Also called Lemon Mint
Linnaeus named the genus Monarda in honor of a 16th century Spanish physician and botanist, Nicolas Bautista Monardes (1493-1588). Monardes studied medicinal plants brought back to Spain from the New World.

Chrysanthemums aren't just for porches. They are tough perennial plants that will often bloom in both early summer and fall when planted in a garden. Come check them out at the Faulkner County Museum & Gardens.
