An explosion and fire at Arkansas Valley Scrap Metal on Highway 64 eastof Morrilton triggered a multi-agency response Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters from Sardis, Morrilton, Plumerville, Oppelo, Overcup and Hillcreek, along with the County Task Force, responded to the scene. Some crews worked directly on the fire while others ran tanker shuttles to keep a steady supply of secondary water flowing to the site.

Med-Tech EMS was also on hand, providing medical support to firefighters battling the blaze in near-100-degree heat.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Highway 64 was temporarily closed, with traffic rerouted while crews worked the scene. Firefighters remained on site for approximately two hours before the fire was brought under control.

A countywide burn ban has been issued for Conway County by County Judge Jimmy Hart. It is effective immediately and until further notice.

CITY OF MORRILTON BURN BAN — UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Due to dangerously hot and dry conditions, the City of Morrilton is currently under a Burn Ban until further notice.

No burn permits have been issued within the past two weeks. Please remember that burning without a permit within the City of Morrilton is prohibited under City Ordinance #3 of 2005.

Please refrain from all outdoor burning. These extreme conditions create a serious risk to property and place our firefighters in unnecessary danger.

Morrilton firefighters responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning at the intersection of Elm and Griffin streets, battling flames that heavily damaged the home. All residents escaped safely without injury. Heat from the fire damaged the exterior of a neighboring home; however, firefighters prevented further damage.

Mutual aid units from the Sardis, Overcup and Blackwell fire stations assisted at the scene, supplying tanker trucks to provide secondary water and reduce strain on the municipal water supply.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries while working the blaze and was treated on scene by Med-Tech EMS. No further medical care was required.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
