An explosion and fire at Arkansas Valley Scrap Metal on Highway 64 west of Morrilton triggered a multi-agency response Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters from Sardis, Morrilton, Oppelo, Overcup and Hillcreek, along with the County Task Force, responded to the scene. Some crews worked directly on the fire while others ran tanker shuttles to keep a steady supply of secondary water flowing to the site.

Med-Tech EMS was also on hand, providing medical support to firefighters battling the blaze in near-100-degree heat.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Highway 64 was temporarily closed, with traffic rerouted while crews worked the scene. Firefighters remained on site for approximately two hours before the fire was brought under control.

We are so grateful for the community support we receive, and no one does more for our community than the Conway County Extension Homemakers — a collective group made up of many different chapters. Today, the New Horizons Extension Homemakers chapter presented Med-Tech EMS with handmade "comfort dolls" to share with our younger patients.

While the dolls are a wonderful gesture on their own, they also play a crucial role in patient care. When a sick or injured child struggles to explain exactly where they're hurting, they can use the doll to illustrate. Each doll comes with a marker so kids can draw on it to show paramedics and EMTs exactly where the pain is — not to mention the emotional comfort it provides.

Since the doll travels with the patient, that same benefit carries over to doctors and nurses at the hospital. And when treatment is done, the doll goes home with the child — to be loved, reused, and maybe even become a permanent member of the family.

Nina Richey, from New Horizon EHC, explains the concept in the video below. We can't thank these ladies enough for giving their time and talents to make a child's difficult day a little easier.

We will have them on board soon and hopefully be able to share stories of how they have helped our patients.

Protecting our brothers and sisters in the fire service is more than a responsibility — it’s part of our calling.

Sometimes that means going the extra mile… or getting just a little off the beaten path to make sure our firefighters have the support they need.

We’ll do whatever it takes to look out for them.
