Our detectives are starting to see a vast majority of financial and identity theft crimes originate from overseas. The United States experienced approximately 3,200 incidents in 2025 alone. Only 20 days into the new year, there have already been several major data breaches—including Instagram, the Illinois Department of Health, and the Insurance Office of America—totaling millions of compromised accounts. It is safe to assume that most people's personal information is currently on the dark web.

There are easy steps to manage and protect your personal information:

Enable Hardware Multi-Factor Authentication: Move away from text message codes and use authentication apps or physical security keys.

Update Passwords Regularly: Focus on the "Big Three": your Email, Bank, and Cellphone provider accounts.

Monitor Your Credit for Free: Use the three major bureaus: www.equifax.com, usa.experian.com, and www.transunion.com.

If you see something that doesn’t look right, you can freeze your credit to halt any new applications or purchases. Additionally, if you have a Google account, you can search for “results about you” to find and request the removal of your personal contact information from public search results.
