in 1868 the Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles approved the Marine Corps new emblem: a globe showing the western hemisphere intersected by a fouled anchor surmounted by an eagle. Atop the device, a ribbon was inscribed with the Latin motto "Semper Fidelis." Commandant Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin appointed a special board to create the device for the Corps. The globe signified the service of the U. S. Marines throughout the world. The anchor was indicative of the Corps' ties to the Navy and their amphibious nature. The eagle, symbolizing a proud nation, was not the American bald eagle, but rather a crested eagle, a species found throughout the world. The American bald eagle wouldn't replace the crested eagle until 1954, when President Eisenhower approved the official seal.

Last night the Detachment celebrated the Marine Corps 250th Birthday, where else, but in a bar, with other area Marines, for our cake cutting, the first piece went to our unofficial host Dave Kasher, our oldest Marine present was Ronald McDaniel, 83, who enlisted March 1955, and our youngest Marine was Jesus Rojas, 22, who enlisted October 2021, and then we toasted the Marine Corps and our fallen Marines.
What a great night to enjoy the Brotherhood of Marines. Semper Fi Marines!
