First bestowed by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart stands as our Nation’s oldest military decoration, reserved for those wounded or fallen in defense of our country. From the battlefields of our Revolution to the deserts and mountains of the War on Terror and across every conflict far and wide, its recipients have displayed valor beyond measure. Sustained by an abiding love of liberty and unfailing devotion to country, Purple Heart recipients endured grievous wounds and withstood the horrors of battle, and some even paid the ultimate price to preserve our freedom. The gallantry reflected in the purple fabric on their chest is forever woven into the red, white, and blue thread of our shared American story, and their service remains a solemn reminder of the immense cost of freedom and the sacred responsibility borne by those who wear our Nation’s uniform.

Connor Bernas, Credit Analyst in Ottawa, was chosen for the July 2026 Charitable Giving. Connor chose the Community Foundation of Grundy County specifically for the Our Patriots Fund. When asked why Connor chose this organization, Connor replied: “The welfare of our country's veterans is an area I am most passionate about. Most veterans need assistance navigating both state and federal programs such as healthcare, disability pensions, financial assistance, & the GI bill. The Our Patriots Fund ensures our local veterans receive the assistance they deserve.”

UNACCOMPANIED VETERANS MILITARY HONORS CEREMONY

“HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED”

The Abraham Lincoln Memorial Honors Monday Squad will hold its quarterly military honors ceremony at 9:00 am in Committal Shelter C. The Honors Ceremony will run ~30 minutes.

There will be mass honors for 7 veterans received at the Cemetery and interred without receiving honors. They were buried directly as no one requested Honors for various reasons, such as no next of kin, homeless, etc.

As we get ready for the celebration of our nations birth we would like to encourage everyone to honor our nations flag the correct way during parades and other events.

From the US Flag Code:

During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
