These are pictures from our May electrofishing survey, where trained specialists temporarily stunned, measured, and looked at the health of the fish in Grundy County Lake. While Grundy County is not ranked high when it comes to fishing, our district fishery biologist ranks Grundy County Lake the 2nd or 3rd in his district for panfish. But as you can see here, panfish is not all we have to offer: our largemouth bass, catfish, and walleyes are doing well. We hope anglers of all ages can come out and enjoy some time on or even by the water this summer.

Though it is a bit delayed, we’d still like to thank mothers for all that they do. We’d also love to boost this post by the Iowa DNR. Sometimes people call us about fawns that are alone, or baby squirrels that might have fallen out of the nest. But mother deer can be nearby even if you don’t see them, and mother squirrels will come and pick up their young to move them to a different nest. Because of this, touching, moving, or trying to give baby animals food or water might do more harm than good. In most cases, animal moms know best, even if it looks strange to us. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

Happy Mother's Day, Iowa 🤎

Remember, wildlife moms care for their young a bit differently than we do. Just because she's not near her fawn doesn't mean she's not caring for it - in fact, she's probably nearby, watching carefully.

Naturalist Hunter Lott caught two male pheasants sparring on a rainy day. Both of them have made it pretty clear they don’t want to see the other around! Spring is a time of new growth and new beginnings. And for many animals, that means plenty of territorial and breeding disputes as the new generation of young is to come. So for pheasants, “playing chicken” is a part of their nature.

If you want to create a healthy grassland, setting it on fire seems like the last thing you would do, right? Actually, this is a very important management practice, called a “prescribed burn”. These carefully managed fires mimic the natural fires that would have burned away dead and dried grasses on the prairie and allowed new growth to come through. And because these fires are unique to these ecosystems, invasive and woody plants can’t tolerate them as well, and this allows native plants to have more of a foothold in their own territory. So if you see these fires in any of our parks, don’t worry; our fully trained GCC staff is monitoring the situation and making sure our grasslands are as healthy as possible.
