We are so blessed to be partnering with Morristown City!
HOME GRANT PROVIDES HOUSING IN OUR COMMUNITY
Last month, the City was proud to be a part of a special “Key Presentation” ceremony to officially hand over the keys to a new home for local resident Phyllis Walker and her grandson. The new home was a result of a joint effort between the City and Tennessee's Community Assistance Corporation (TCAC) to obtain funding through the federal HOME Grant.
The City applied for and was granted $810,000 in HOME Grant funds. This HUD-funded grant, distributed through the TN Housing Development Agency(THDA), provides funding to rehabilitate or rebuild housing for low-income residents. The City chose TCAC, headquartered here in Morristown, to help administer the grant program and the construction services.
In the Fall of 2024, local homeowners in need applied for the grant and 8 homeowners were chosen to receive funding. Some of the selected homes were in a condition that could be rehabilitated while some, including Ms. Walker’s home, met the threshold to be reconstructed. Over the course of a year, TCAC worked with Ms. Walker to design and rebuild her new home.
When presenting Ms. Walker with the keys to her new home, TCAC Executive Director Krystal Gibbons said “Today is a celebration of perseverance and community. This home means safety, dignity, and a chance for Ms. Walker and her grandson to thrive. We are honored to be a part of it.”
"The City of Morristown is honored to have an amazing organization such as TCAC working on mitigating the low-income housing crisis in Hamblen County,” Mayor Chesney said. “We are extremely grateful for THDA's funding for this project and very excited to continue this work with TCAC to benefit our community."
Ms. Walker shared her gratitude, stating, “This home means everything to me, I am so grateful!.”
The home was made possible through TCAC's and the City of Morristown's commitment to developing affordable housing for low-income families. This milestone represents more than just a roof over their heads—it symbolizes stability, opportunity, and hope for generations to come.
