Get involved behind-the-scenes at Morris County Historic Sites. This fall, we are seeking adult volunteers (or teens 16+) for events at Fosterfields and Historic Speedwell in Morristown, NJ. Ideal Event Volunteers are friendly, flexible, and enjoy working with children and families. Join us to assist with guest services and event activities. All volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors.

Bilingual individuals are especially encouraged to apply. Events are held on weekdays and weekends and require a minimum 2-hour commitment.

Happy birthday, Alfred Vail!

Alfred Vail was born on this day in 1807. Alfred worked alongside Samuel F.B. Morse on the invention of the electromagnetic telegraph.

The Vail Family also supported the endeavor financially. The very first successful demonstration of the telegraph was given inside the Factory Building in January of 1838, located on the original Vail Homestead.

The site is now Historic Speedwell, a National Historic Landmark in Morristown, NJ, preserving the story of the development of the telegraph and highlighting Alfred Vail's role in the project.
