On Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, we remember and honor the surviving families of our nation’s fallen service members.

Gold Star Mothers and Families have been inextricably linked to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier since its inception in 1921 after World War I. Especially for the relatives of service members whose remains were never found or identified, the Tomb has served as a powerful symbol in place of a grave where they can grieve.

Today, we pause to honor the mothers and families who carry the lifelong legacy of a loved one who gave their life while serving our nation.

⭐ THE HISTORY OF THE GOLD STAR

The tradition of the Gold Star dates back to World War I. Families displayed service flags in their windows to show that a loved one was serving. A blue star represented a family member serving in the military. When that service member died, the blue star was replaced or covered by a gold star, signifying the family’s tremendous loss.

Today, the Gold Star represents much more than a symbol. It represents love, sacrifice, loss, remembrance, and an enduring commitment to never forget.

Behind every Gold Star is a story.
Behind every Gold Star is a family.
Behind every Gold Star is a life that mattered.

Today, we remember the fallen and stand beside the mothers, fathers, spouses, children, siblings, and families who continue to carry their legacy.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸⭐

To close out the exhibit, BAA’s own Dave Harrison sounded a poignant rendition of Taps (27:25). Dave honored our fallen by sounding Taps daily while The Wall That Heals was in Wadsworth, Ohio.
