FINANCIAL RELIEF FOR AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY BUSINESSES ANNOUNCED

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) joins Governor Bill Lee and the Financial Stimulus Accountability Group in announcing new financial relief programs for businesses adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve seen how the economic impacts of COVID-19 have affected all types of businesses,” Governor Lee said. “The Financial Stimulus Accountability Group has been working since April to ensure proper fiscal management of stimulus funds, and these relief programs can be game changers for many agricultural and forestry businesses.”

TDA has established the Coronavirus Agricultural and Forestry Business (CAFB) Fund to help ensure stability of the food supply chain and agribusiness economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are accepted between August 17 and August 31, 2020.

“Agriculture was not immune to the economic impact of COVID-19,” Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M. said. “It is Tennessee’s number one industry and we’re grateful that our leaders recognize its importance to the state’s economic recovery. This relief will be helping farm and forestry families sustain their small businesses, employ others, and continue to feed, clothe, and shelter all citizens of Tennessee.”

The fund will provide financial assistance to agricultural, food, forestry, and nonprofit agricultural entities in Tennessee. Eligible categories include business disruption, cost associated with pandemic response, supply chain enhancement, and increased meat processing capacity. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received COVID-19 relief funding from other available relief programs.

Grant applicants must demonstrate business disruption impact from March 1, 2020 to December 30, 2020. Businesses that receive financial assistance from the CAFB Fund are not required to repay the funds. Funding is disbursed on a reimbursement basis. Applicants can expect to be notified of their application status by September 15, 2020.

CAFB Fund details can be found at tncaresact.tn.gov/tda. Contact TDA’s Business Development Division at 615-837-5160 with questions.

Summer Earth Team Volunteers Make an Impact in Hamblen County
In cooperation with the Hamblen Soil Conservation District, AmeriCorps, and the NRCS Morristown Service Center, Earth Team volunteers Samuel Poisal, senior at Morristown East High School, and Hayley Loggans, senior at Morristown West have seized the opportunity to make a difference in their community.
Both students have spent their summer assisting NRCS District Conservationist, Patty McCloud and Soil Conservationist, Addison Davidson with site visits and community outreach, while gaining experience in the field and learning the fundamentals of soil health stewardship. Hayley and Samuel have also assisted Grainger SCD Soil Technician, Allison Davidson with writing conservation plans, and entering the information in CD and CART. Both have worked on assessments in CART and identified the SWAPA resource concerns.
Hayley and Samuel serve as “Reporter” for their school’s FFA program, and are involved in student leadership through agricultural career development. Both students plan to further their education at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee and then on to post-secondary institutions after graduation. Both students have said “Their experience as Earth Team volunteers has been very rewarding by making a meaningful contribution for a better environment and a brighter future”.

This week, the National Conservation Partnership held discussions and agreed to send a joint message on the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Beginning Monday, March 23, USDA service centers will be instituting locked door policies, with no public access to USDA offices. One employee per agency will be permitted in the office (one conservation district employee, one NRCS employee, one FSA employee, etc.) on a rotating schedule. High-risk employees will not be subject to rotation during this full telework plan.

There is work to be done, and our field work will continue, but we must adapt to support getting this work done with limited personal contact. It is of the utmost importance that we all do our part to limit the exposure and spread of COVID-19.

For farmers, the best source of information is farmers.gov/coronavirus . We’re continuing to update information on the operations status of our Service Centers and what programs and services are currently available.

The .gov means it’s official. Federal government websites always use a .gov or .mil domain. Before sharing sensitive information online, make sure you’re on a .gov or .mil site by inspecting your browser’s address (or “location”) bar.
